These high temperatures can be dangerous to ill-prepared truck drivers who have to drive in the heat. So how do you prepare for heatwaves like this? 🤒

🚰🚰🚰 Well the answer is quite simple, 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿! When your body adjusts to the sudden increase in temperature, it can sweat 2-3 liters more than average. 🥵 Although sweating is the body’s way of getting rid of excess heat, it also drains your fluids, which is why it is crucial to stay hydrated.

🌬 Also, it is important to pay attention to the heat index as well as temperature because humidity also plays a large role in determining how hot it feels. If humidity levels are high, it’s harder for your sweat to evaporate and cool you off. 💨

So the best way to combat these high temperatures and heat index readings is to always hydrate even if you don’t feel thirsty, that way you’re less likely to experience adverse effects from the heat. 🔥

According to Truckers News, Indiana is currently housing a project that will upgrade existing rest areas and bump the number of truck parking spaces 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭,𝟭𝟬𝟬 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝟮,𝟱𝟬𝟬. 🤩

💸💸 This 10-year, $275 million dollar project is already underway and Pigeon Creek Welcome Center, just off of Interstate 69 near Angola, has already been completed.

Moreover, these rest stops are not only getting more parking spaces, they are also receiving more modern restrooms and indoor facilities, walking trails, picnic spaces and outdoor shelters. 🥳

With the implementing of new and improved rest areas, truckers now have more options to choose from when they are taking a break. ☕️☕️☕️

👮 Last week, Nevada Badge On Board was back.

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers went undercover to catch the law breaker from July 13 to 15. This time, they focused on traffic violations, such as speeding, aggressive driving, unsafe lane changes, following too closely, failure to signal lane changes, failure to yield the right of way, distracted driving and impairment. In the first hour of enforcement, NHP issued more than 60 citations. 🚛💨

What is Badge On Board❓

✨ It's the other name for Nevada Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks (TACT) Program. It aims to use education, enforcement, and evaluation activities to reduce commercial vehicle related crashes, and NHP adopts a "𝗻𝗼-𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲" policy during Badge On Board. Moreover, in 2009, FMCSA has granted two awards, a total of around five hundred thousand funds, to support the TACT Program in Nevada. 💰

🚛 Trucker employment status balances on edge as the California Trucking Association (CTA) seeks U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on whether or not the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Authorization Act of 1994 trumps the use of the AB 5 (California Assembly Bill 5) ABC Test. Although the Ninth Circuit denied a rehearing of CTA vs Bonta, they have tentatively halted the ABC Test going into effect while the final decision is being made. 👓

The ABC Test determines whether a person is an independent contractor or an employee. The determinants are as follows:
1️⃣ The person is free from the control and direction of the hiring entity in connection with the performance of the work, both under the contract for the performance of the work and in fact.
2️⃣ The person performs work that is outside the usual course of the hiring entity’s business.
3️⃣ The person is customarily engaged in an independently established trade, occupation, or business of the same nature as that involved in the work performed.

The CTA worries that applying the ABC Test on trucker employment status will place restrictions on their entrepreneurial freedoms, while the Teamsters labor union states that the test can help misclassified drivers receive more legal protection and benefits. Ultimately, it comes down to whether or not the truck drivers themselves want to be considered employees or independent contractors. 🔒🔒

After 5 years of researching and testing, Kenwoth has introduced the MD truck lineup on April 5, 2021, ranging from Class 5 to light Class 8, all built from ground up. Production is expected to increase in the third quarter 2021.

‼️ Connecticut House has approved Highway User Fee with an 88-59 vote on Tuesday, June 9. The bill imposes monthly tax on heavy-duty truck carriers based on truck's weight. For vehicles with a gross weight between 26,000 and 28,000 lb., the rate would be 2.5 cents per mile. For vehicles with a gross weight between 78,001 and 80,000 lb., the rate would be 10 cents per mile. 👣

The bill will be starting from or after January 1, 2023, and is expected to create $45 million new revenue in 2023 fiscal year as well as $90 million annually afterward. But the bill also has one exemption: the CMVs who transport milk and dairy products are waived from the bill.

According to Sen. Will Haskell, the main reason to have this bill is because CT has spent about $95 million per year only on maintaining and repairing the damage of large trucks. However, Joe Sculley, president of the Motor Transport Association of Connecticut (MTAC), has also claimed that the bill is just about money for that the dairy trucks who weighed around 100,000 pounds are exempted from the bill. The trucking industry was not happy about the bill and the trucker lobbyists have addressed the issue that the trucks might bypass CT to avoid the fee. 💰💰

On May 18th, 2021, Senator John Cornyn proposed a truck-only Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) tax during the Senate Finance Committee’s hearing, citing a $0.25 per-mile rate.

✒️ Last week, the president of American Trucking Associations Chris Spear and the president of Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association Todd Spencer have co-signed a letter to express their strong opposition to the Cornyn tax on the behalf of American trucking industry. In the letter, they claim that trucks have already paid 48 times more in federal highway user fees than other cars do. It is inequitable to place the burden on the truckers for avoiding Highway Trust Fund insolvency. 📖
