Like many others, I watched these fires in real time from my home in Pasadena, California. The experience was breathtaking and unlike anything I have ever seen. This wasn't a minor event but a powerful menace surrounding the greater Los Angeles County, destroying everything in its path. The impact of these fires was devastating and caused an indescribable amount of desperation that, in many ways, leveled the playing field of survival for everyone, regardless of their background or wealth.

Knowing the fire's impact on our everyday lives, it's sad that someone could intentionally cause this. I hope this person or persons are held accountable for the reckless actions that resulted in so much devastation, suffering, loss, anguish, fear, anxiety, uncertainty, displacement, disruption, or sorrow throughout the community.

As a dyslexic and someone with learning disabilities, I've faced obstacles, but with the proper guidance, I've made significant strides in honing my skills and developing a distinct authorial voice.

By focusing my energy and minimizing distractions, I've maintained a purposeful routine, dedicating myself to meeting submission deadlines and completing my book. This piece is just the first of several stories and articles that will support my upcoming memoir. This collection invites readers to delve into my personal journey and life experiences. I'm excited to share that the book will also feature a selection of my poems, chosen by others, which will further enrich the narrative.

I firmly believe in the power of storytelling. While we can write our own stories and bios, it's crucial to allow others to contribute their perspectives, ensuring a more authentic representation. Throughout this journey, I've been surrounded by an extraordinary group of supportive individuals—my protective angels—who have loved me unconditionally, even during the times when I found it hard to love myself.

I recognize that I haven’t always been the easiest person to love or care for. Throughout the years, I’ve carried the burden of deep hurt and anger, often misdirecting that pent-up frustration toward those closest to me.

However, amidst these challenges, I’ve been fortunate to form lifelong friendships, and one of these individuals has been by my side for an incredible 50 years. It’s hard to believe, but we’ve shared half a century of camaraderie. I knew his entire family well; his older brother and sister were genuinely kind to me during my youth. I even had the privilege of knowing his parents before they aged gracefully into a better place.

As a teenager, I faced significant struggles and desperately needed help and protection. This friend’s father, driven by his big heart and genuine care for others, recognized my situation. When he took an unexpected phone call from the Ontario Provincial Courts, it changed the course of my life. By stepping up to take responsibility for my well-being, he helped me break free from the reach of my family member, who had fractured my nose and jaw and broken my collarbone twice by the time I was seventeen.

Although it was just for the summer, I spent it with a family of incredible character, and it turned out to be one of the best summers of my life.
