The pool industry often prioritizes volume over craftsmanship. Many builders subcontract plaster work to the lowest bidder while maintaining the majority of the project’s profit margin. As a result, some plaster crews take shortcuts, lack experience with proper aggregate exposure techniques, and cut costs by reducing the amount of dye, quartz, and other aggregate materials used in the finish to increase profit margins.Too often, responsibility is shifted to water chemistry or homeowner maintenance. However, brushing is intended to support a proper startup process, not to correct defects caused by improper installation or application practices.

🏊‍♂️ Thinking about resurfacing your pool? Don't skip the chip-out.
A full chip-out provides the solid foundation needed for a long-lasting plaster finish.
When new plaster is applied over existing plaster, you're essentially stacking layers. That can lead to:
✅ Delamination
✅ Pop-offs
✅ Premature finish failure
Sure, you might save a few hundred dollars upfront by skipping a full chip-out.
But that small savings can easily turn into a major expense later.
The worst part? Many plaster failures end up being blamed on water chemistry when the real issue was poor surface preparation from the start.
Do it once. Do it right.
Save yourself the future repair costs, frustration, and anxiety by investing in the proper foundation from day one.
