๐Ÿ’” Dusty, Our Gentle Giant ๐Ÿ’”
Today, we said goodbye to our beloved Dusty.

Dusty was more than a horse. He was a trusted partner, a patient teacher, a confidence builder, and a friend to countless participants, volunteers, staff, and families.

With his gentle spirit and kind heart, he touched lives in ways that words cannot fully capture. Whether he was carrying a rider, standing quietly beside someone who needed comfort, or simply greeting visitors with his familiar presence, Dusty made Affinity Ranch a better place.

While our hearts are broken, we are grateful for every lesson, every memory, and every moment we were fortunate enough to share with him.

Run free, sweet Dusty. Thank you for all the lives you changed and the love you gave so freely. You will be deeply missed and forever remembered. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’™

The link to the Friends of Dusty Facebook group is shared in the comments for anyone who would like to share photos, stories, and memories.

๐Ÿด What is Adaptive Horsemanship?

Itโ€™s about so much more than riding a horse.

At Affinity Ranch, adaptive horsemanship is designed to help participants build skills that extend far beyond the arena.

Through their time with the horses, participants may develop:

๐Ÿ’ช Balance, coordination, and core strength
๐ŸŒŸ Confidence and increased independence
๐ŸŽ Responsibility through horse care and grooming
๐Ÿค Communication and social skills
๐Ÿง  Focus, attention, and self-regulation
๐ŸŒฑ Life skills that can be carried into everyday activities

Our program serves individuals of all ages with developmental and intellectual disabilities, physical challenges, autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, mental health needs, and emotional or behavioral support needs.

Whether someone is taking their very first ride or building advanced riding skills, we meet each participant where they are and help them move forward at their own pace.

Every lesson is supported by a dedicated team of certified therapeutic riding instructors and trained volunteers, creating a safe and encouraging environment where growth can happen.

Because adaptive horsemanship isnโ€™t just about learning to ride.

Itโ€™s about building confidence, independence, and skills for life. ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿด Have you ever met someone who can make you smile without saying a word?

Sprite has that gift.

Sheโ€™s curious, gentle, and always ready to see whatโ€™s going on. Give her a chance to say hello, and thereโ€™s a good chance sheโ€™ll brighten your day.

Some horses have a way of making people feel seen. Looking at that smile, weโ€™d say Sprite is one of them. ๐Ÿ’™

June Volunteer Spotlight ๐Ÿ’› Meet Paula

For Paula, volunteering at Affinity Ranch has been a way to reconnect with something she has loved for a long time.

Having owned horses before becoming a parent, she always looked forward to the day when her kids were grown and she could get back into horses. When she discovered Affinity Ranch, it felt like the perfect way to ease back into the horse world while helping foster the incredible connection between horses and humans.

That connection has had a profound impact on her own life as well.

As Paula shared, โ€œIt has put the light back in my eyes.โ€

The healing connection between horse and human has inspired her so deeply that she is now pursuing a career focused on fostering that same connection for others.

When asked about her favorite ranch animals, Paula admits itโ€™s hard to choose. She loves the unique personality each horse brings, including Dora, Lilly, Sprite, and Dusty. But Friday holds a special place in her heart. He was the horse in her very first lesson at the ranch and reminds her of her last horse.

Outside of the ranch, Paula also volunteers at a mustang rescue and sanctuary. When sheโ€™s not with horses, youโ€™ll find her paddle boarding, exploring Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico with her dog, spending time with friends, or getting lost in a good book.

We are so grateful for the passion, compassion, and positive energy Paula brings to the ranch community. Volunteers like Paula help make the magic of Affinity Ranch possible every day.

Thank you, Paula, for sharing your heart, your time, and your love of horses with our riders, animals, and community. ๐Ÿ’›
