April is Cancer Awareness & Early Detection Month. For my family and I, this month is EXTREMELY personal and hits very hard.
I lost my father to cholangiocarcinoma — a very rare and aggressive bile duct cancer that took his life far too soon. And he wasn’t alone. Over the years, I’ve watched many of our other firefighters who became my second family face their own battles with cancer — the ones who dedicated their lives to protecting others, now fighting the invisible enemy that followed them home from the job.
Studies show firefighters face a significantly higher risk of cancer due to repeated exposure to toxic smoke, chemicals, and carcinogens — and that risk doesn’t retire when they do.
EARLY DETECTION DOES SAVE LIVES!!! Please encourage all first responders in your life to get screened, get checked, and take their health as seriously as they take everyone else’s safety.
To every firefighter who has fought this battle, is fighting it now, or has lost someone to it — we see you. We honor you. We stand with you. 🙏🏼
