12 Rules to Becoming Limitless

These rules were developed under fire (gun fire).

They will make you uncomfortable.

The story. I was deployed to Bagdad, Iraq from September 2005 to September 2006 with the Air Force as an Intelligence Analyst. This was my first deployment.

It was only the second time the Air Force deployed for 365 days and they gave me ZERO combat training.

Oh, and I did dodge bullets and mortars for 10 of the 12 months. Schedule a 1-2-1 and I'll tell you why. It has to do with a little three letter agency....

The 12 Rules

Rule 1. Never tell them anything. Work first then brag about it. Other people have an innate urge to stop others from getting ahead.

Rule 2. Own all of it. The level of responsibility you assume will be the level of power/influence you will have to fulfill it.

Rule 3. Walk towards the gunfire. Don't run, that is how you get killed. Walk. Take your time and move with deliberate action.

Rule 4. People over paper. Take care of the human being in front of you and be present with them. Then follow up with any paper actions required.

Rule 5. Hump your own ruck. Don't expect others to help you get where you are going. Expect to go at it alone. If they help, that is great.

Rule 6. Be prepared. Do you have on you everything you need for the day. What are you tools, do you know how to use them, and do you need different ones.

Rule 7. Sleep on the bottom bunk. Put your armor and gear on the top bunk so if bullets come through the roof they don't get you while you are sleeping. Or make sure that you are taking care of yourself so you can show up in the morning.

Rule 8. Show up. 90% of the battle is getting to the field. The other 10% takes care of itself once the bullets start flying.

Rule 9. You are never ready. If you are confident that you can handle it, you probably won't last long. Be a a lot anxious and aware of your surroundings. Fear makes you focused.

Rule 10. Stay calm. Let me repeat...stay calm. It doesn't matter if the building is on fire. If you don't stay calm under pressure, you cannot think straight and make the right decisions when it counts.

Rule 11. It is always the little things that count. One bullet can save a life. One word can kill. The smallest actions are normally the most remembered.

Rule 12. You are already dead, they can't kill you twice. If the worst thing has already happened, then what are you afraid of. Move with purpose and live a life worth having.

I might have said too much, but this is my truth.
