America the Beautiful: Charla took me to the Erie Canal today in Fairport, NY to see my first summer boat traveling under the iconic Fairport Lift Bridge passing west. Fittingly called Serenity based in Portage, Indianaβthis is the latest Iβve ever captured my first boat of the season. It was terrific on a PERFECT day here!
At 132 feet long, it takes up the entire frame. Today, June 15, the largest operating steam locomotive in the country is officially on public display for its coast-to-coast tour honoring America's 250th birthday. It is sitting at the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA, located at 350 Cliff St. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see it reunited side-by-side with Steamtown's own Big Boy No. 4012! Turn your volume all the way up and listen to that massive whistle blast echo! ππ¨ π Steamtown National Historic Site | Scranton, PA
Check out the builder's plate in this clipβthis exact machine, the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014, was built right here in New York at the Schenectady Works back in November of 1941. Today, June 15, this 1.2-million-pound legend is sitting on display at the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA, giving thousands of people a look at the greatest era of steam engineering. Seeing these massive driving wheels and hearing that authentic steam hiss up close is like stepping straight into a history book. Share this with someone who appreciates classic American engineering! πΊπΈπ π Steamtown National Historic Site | Scranton, PA Union Pacific Railroad
If you think the Big Boy 4014 looks massive up close, seeing it alongside the thousands of people who turned up to witness history puts its true scale into perspective. I caught this steel giant steaming through New York, but today, June 14, it is officially rolling through Pennsylvania! Right now, the Big Boy is making a sold-out passenger run from Nesquehoning to Pittston. From there, it will arrive in Scranton to be put on public display at the Steamtown National Historic Site starting tomorrow, June 15. Turn your volume all the way up because that steam whistle echoes for miles! Who is out in PA tracking it today or heading to Scranton tomorrow? Let us know in the comments! π π Currently in PA (Nesquehoning to Pittston route)
Absolutely incredible to capture this live! ππΊπΈ I caught this moment standing right trackside as the crew gave the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014 whistle a serious workout. Watching the engineer operate this 1940s giant up close really shows the dedication it takes to keep American history alive.
They truly don't build them like this anymore. Share this with someone who appreciates classic American engineering! π οΈβ‘
