🌈 Pride Fact: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

Before there were social media campaigns and corporate Pride sponsors, there were the Sisters, using humor, visibility, and compassion to support the LGBTQ+ community when it needed it most.

In 1979, a group of activists in San Francisco donned nuns’ habits as a form of joyful protest and community outreach. Inspired by the traditions of service, charity, and community care, they became the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. What began as a playful appearance quickly grew into a worldwide movement.

The Sisters adopted a mission of:

❤️ Expounding universal joy
💜 Fighting stigma and shame
🧡 Serving their communities through charitable works

During the height of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, the Sisters became some of the most visible advocates for people living with HIV/AIDS. They raised funds, educated the public, cared for those affected by the epidemic, and provided comfort and hope during one of the most difficult periods in LGBTQ+ history.

Today, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence have chapters around the world and have raised millions of dollars for charitable causes while continuing to promote inclusion, education, and community service.

We’re fortunate to have an incredibly strong and active chapter right here in the Coachella Valley. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are a familiar presence at community events, fundraisers, Pride celebrations, and charitable efforts throughout the year.

Whether they’re raising money for local nonprofits, supporting those in need, promoting health education, or simply bringing joy and visibility to our community, the Sisters continue to embody the spirit of service that has defined the organization for more than four decades.

Why It Matters

The Sisters showed the world that activism doesn’t always have to be angry. Sometimes it can be compassionate. Sometimes it can be joyful. And sometimes it can arrive in full makeup, a fabulous habit, and a mission to make the world a little kinder.
