Anosognosia is a neurological condition where a person is unaware of their own illness or impairments. In dementia, this means someone may genuinely not realize they’re experiencing changes in memory, thinking, or behavior. It’s not denial—it’s a result of changes in the right prefrontal cortex and right parietal lobe, areas involved in self-awareness and insight. If someone says, “I’m fine, I don’t need help,” they’re not being dishonest—they may truly believe that. Understanding anosognosia can help us respond with empathy instead of frustration.
