Winner's of the Women's Class 2023!
We are four female marine scientists raising funds to support marine conservation action through an extreme challenge: rowing across the Atlantic Ocean as part of the World's Toughest Row in 2023. We are aiming to raise $300,000 by December 2023 to support three charities that are helping our oceans (and humans who depend on them): Green Wave (https://www.greenwave.org/)--regenerative ocean farmer
One year ago, the four of us arrived in La Gomera for the last bits of preparation before the start of the World’s Toughest Row—Atlantic. What an adventure that was! Not just the 5 ½ weeks offshore, but the nearly three years of preparation to get to the start line and have a successful crossing . We recently added a page or our website to share what we learned along the way for others thinking about tackling this or another similar challenge. Our experience might be especially relevant to North American teams (like tips for importing a UK ocean rowing boat into the USA), but some or our suggestions (like watch schedule that worked for us, physical and mental training, boat systems, etc..) could be relevant to any team. Check it out here https://saltyscience.org/advice-to-future-rowers/ ; we hope it's helpful!

Such a great video to watch and relive some of this crazy challenge we took on along with 37 other teams. Congrats to the entire fleet of the World's Toughest Row Atlantic 2023!!

So much fun talking about our crossing with the kids and teachers at l'École élémentaire catholique L'Étoile de l'Est! First talk about the row in French 😊
It’s about the journey not the destination, for sure—and that’s definitely true for ocean rowing! It’s a LONG journey across and it’s hard, scary, tiring and painful for much of it… but it’s also pretty amazing at so many points along the way. And the feeling of getting to the finish line is just incredible!!!!
Here’s a quick glimpse at the last few minutes of our race, as we were rowing into English Harbor, Antigua, after over 38 days at sea—just as the World's Toughest Row media boat came to greet us. You hear Noelle tell Lauren “Think about Cady!!” (Cady Hart-Petterssen who was our coach), as they were rowing extra hard for a few hundred meters through our turn north into English Harbour with a strong wind from the East which made the approach into the narrow channel quite challenging (hence why Chantale laughs with “we’re not even going to hit the buoy!!” which was not a given just a few seconds earlier). Noelle’s “prizes” are the flares that we lit just moments later to celebrate our arrival in Antigua!!! 🤩

It's amazing to look at our track from La Gomera to Antigua and reflect on all that went into it. Super stoked to announce that we'll be rowing again this December, but this time from Antigua to La Gomera! We aim to be the first team to row west to east at this latitude. We're training hard to make sure our bodies are prepared for this extra challenging journey!!

Talking about our Atlantic crossing in Ozona, with the community that really rallied behind Salty Science in so many ways, was really awesome. So thankful to all for the support over the last three years ❤️

Salty Science tips for ocean rowing
#1: find clothes that don’t smell!! With only 4 t-shirts each for the entire crossing, our shirts got worn for many days between washes. We were super stoked to have clothes from Zenkai Sports, which are made with this super cool water-repelling and anti-odor cotton. We’d typically wear each item for about a week without washing and it felt fine!!
