When the night fell over the Nairobi Nursery, the air was filled with heartbreaking cries. Several baby elephants — recently rescued after losing their mothers to poaching — couldn’t stop calling out into the darkness, their tiny trunks reaching for comfort that wasn’t there.

But they weren’t alone. The devoted caretakers from the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) stayed by their side all night, whispering soft words and gently touching their foreheads — the same way a mother elephant would comfort her calf in the wild.

These caretakers sleep on thin mattresses near the baby elephants every night, wrapping themselves in blankets while holding milk bottles and torches. They know that the emotional wounds run deep. Elephants, just like humans, mourn. They remember. And they love. 💔

They had no training, no collars, not even names. Just a group of stray dogs, ribs showing, paws worn from the streets. Yet that afternoon, they did something that left everyone watching in silence: they formed a line.

Hungry, yes. Desperate, certainly. But not chaotic.

Each dog waited its turn for food—no pushing, no fighting, no snarls.

Just patience. One by one, they stepped forward, accepted their share, and moved aside, as if guided by an unspoken code of respect.

For animals who had been given so little in life—no homes, no certainty, no promise of kindness—it was an act that spoke volumes. Dignity in the face of hunger. Order in the face of desperation.

Perhaps that’s why it struck so deeply. If stray dogs, forgotten and overlooked, can wait their turn with patience and grace, what excuse do we have when we lose ours?

Sometimes the greatest lessons come from the most unexpected teachers.

Ginger the pitbull saved her human (a mother) and her daughter from a cobra in Russia. According to the daughter, Ginger sustained 9 snake bite marks. During the last moments of her life, she only looked at her human, wagging her tail the whole time. Ginger's loyalty and bravery are a story that deserves to be shared. Dogs are not just pets, dogs are family.

Don't act heartlessly after reading this post, let's step up and do our part for that noble dog.

Respectfully to Brave Pitbull

Today we celebrate National Take Your Pet to Work Day, but when you're the County Judge in Montgomery County, every day is take your pet to work day when you’ve got over 500 dogs and cats waiting for homes at our shelter!

Last year, one of our shelter pups, Meg, joined me at the office for a day-long “field trip.” Not only was she a fantastic co-worker, but she also found her forever home shortly after! Just one more reason why I’m honored to do what I do on behalf of the citizens and animals of Montgomery County.

If you’ve been thinking about adopting or fostering, now is the perfect time. The Montgomery County Animal Shelter is full of loving companions ready to be part of your family. Help us empty the shelter and give these pets the second chance they deserve.
