Disc degeneration, nerve compression, and spinal cord involvement are not visible on an X-ray, but these conditions can be identified through MRI imaging. MRIs provide the level of detail needed to visualize spinal discs, nerve roots, ligaments, and the spinal cord directly, making them critical to identifying the cause of neck and back pain.

Interpreting those findings in the context of a patient's symptoms and functional goals is where clinical expertise matters most. Not every finding on an MRI requires intervention, and not every source of pain is visible on one.

Read the full guide at the link in bio to learn what MRI scans diagnose, how they compare to other imaging studies, and when imaging is the right next step.

The surgical decision a patient makes today will shape how their spine functions for the rest of their life.

ADR preserves the spine's natural range of motion rather than eliminating it, which supports a faster return to activity and reduces the long-term mechanical stress that fusion places on adjacent spinal levels.

Swipe through for a closer look at how ADR compares to spinal fusion, and visit the link in our bio to learn whether you may be a candidate.

One of the clearest takeaways from the 26th Annual International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery Conference (ISASS 2026) is that the “fusion for everyone” era is over, and motion preservation is shaping the future of spine care.

Dr. Lanman and the ADR Top Doctors have been at the forefront of this shift, building and advancing the clinical evidence for motion-preserving procedures and providing patient access to care options beyond fusion.

While the broader field works to close that gap, the ADR Top Doctors continue to advance outcomes for patients who don't want to wait for the standard of care to catch up.

Prolonged forward head posture compresses cervical discs and strains the surrounding musculature over time, so most people don't notice the cumulative effect until symptoms are well established. Small daily adjustments to workstation setup, movement habits, and sleep position can significantly reduce that strain before it compounds.

For persistent neck or back pain that doesn't respond to conservative care, a clinical evaluation can help determine whether something structural is contributing.

Spinal fusion is often presented as the only option, but for many patients, it doesn't have to be.

The ADR Top Doctors network brings together leading physicians nationwide who specialize in motion-preserving spine care. Each doctor has been evaluated for surgical volume, outcomes, and clinical alignment with artificial disc replacement. Each has also helped their patients reach a different outcome than the one they were initially offered.
