Congratulations to San Jose State University for ranking No. 2 in the nation for data-driven programming and software engineering skills. (And yes– those skills still matter in a post-AI world; one Nvidia exec told me they’re hiring 3,000 software developers this year.)
SJSU provides the antidote to the maxim that “while talent is equally distributed, opportunity is not”; today Silicon Valley employs more engineers and software developers graduating from SJSU than from any other university.
San Jose State at top of class when it comes to AI - San José Spotlight San Jose State University has smoked the competition in a national computer science and technical skills assessment, beating out Stanford, CalTech and UC Berkeley.

As wildfire season begins, we’ve learned FEMA has withheld $1.68 billion in disaster mitigation funding due to California and Colorado. Congressman Joe Neguseand 25 colleagues joined me demanding FEMA release Congressionally-approved funds.
It’s 3x harder for blue states to get disaster aid they need and are owed under Trump. Wildfires don’t heed red or blue lines; FEMA must not either.
Lawmakers want answers over FEMA funding freeze on California projects Nearly two dozen California lawmakers sent a letter to FEMA seeking an explanation for why it appears to be withholding more than $1.6 billion.

Americans deserve confidence that foreign investors can't access sensitive personal data or exert influence over major American news outlets.
I joined U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, Senator Adam Schiff, and Senator Richard Blumenthal in urging the Treasury Department to conduct a full national security review of the proposed Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger, financed in large part by the Saudi crown price and sovereign wealth funds in Qatar and Abui Dhabi.

While tariffs and a war drive grocery prices higher for struggling families, the House majority just voted to cut $141 million from a program to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for low-income pregnant women and children.
Meanwhile, our MAHA-inspired administration has “ended the war on saturated fat,” and spent $150 million to prop up sugar growers.
House bill rolls back food aid for pregnant women, children Millions of WIC recipients would have less money for fruits and vegetables under the legislation, which funds the Agriculture Department and other agencies.

Amid this terrible news for Pacifica, we should feel grateful for the rapid response from local officials to protect public safety. The Pacifica Pier has long served as a gathering place for residents, visitors, fishermen, and local businesses.
Our coastal communities know this story all too well: aging infrastructure, growing storm surges, and rising sea levels threaten the places we know and love. As engineers assess the damage, we will stand ready to support efforts to protect critical infrastructure and preserve the landmarks that define our coastline.
‘Shocked with what I saw’: Pacifica pier abruptly closes after massive crack The city of Pacifica closed its famous but troubled pier Thursday after a massive crack several inches wide appeared across the concrete walkway.
Another whale has died in the Bay, likely hit by a passing ship.
Nearly 1 in 5 gray whales that enter San Francisco Bay die there, and it's past time to protect these beautiful creatures. My Save W***y Act would use crowdsourced data to help protect whales by helping mariners to avoid deadly collisions.
Common sense prevailed today. Rising costs and mounting public outrage forced even members of Trump’s own party to reject his war. The Senate must vote on this War Powers Resolution with haste so we don’t lose this temporary episode of sanity.
We are starting to see the triumph of common sense over corruption here in Washington D.C.

Thank you to the students who formed our first cohort of our Youth Advisory Committee. These young leaders tackled major challenges facing our community, from Medi-Cal access to AI and wildfire resilience. I cannot wait to see where their ideas, leadership, and public service take them–and us–next.
