Life on a sailboat isn’t always sunsets and champagne. A lot of the time, it’s crawling into tight spaces, fixing something you didn’t plan on, and ending the day covered in grease. But honestly? That’s part of what makes this life so satisfying. The work, the wins, the wild stories… it’s all worth it once you’re back at the helm.

SeaKeepers joined researchers from UCSC, Southall Environmental Associates, and the University of St Andrews near California’s Channel Islands to study how naval sonar may influence sea lion behavior; something that has never been tested on wild pinnipeds before. Five female sea lions were tagged the week before the expedition. During this trip, the team tested the tracking systems and confirmed they could successfully relocate the tagged individuals at sea. The team will soon return to recover the tags and analyze the data on how sonar may affect foraging, communication, and mating behaviors. This marks an important first step in understanding how human noise impacts sea lions in the wild. Thank you to DISCOVERY Yacht Valkyrie for helping make this research possible.
