ONYX Magazine was most delighted to sponsor and attend a charming Literary Tea graciously hosted by the distinguished ladies of the Orange County (Florida) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Arrayed in their finest Regency raiment, guests gathered at Highland Manor Apopka for an afternoon of uncommon elegance and refinement.

The company partook of delicate tea sandwiches, savored fragrant herbal infusions, and sampled an array of exquisitely prepared sweetmeats worthy of the highest praise. Beyond these culinary pleasures, attendees were instructed in the fashionable dances of the Regency era and took to the floor with great enthusiasm. To the delight of all assembled, contemporary melodies were artfully rendered in the style and sensibilities of the nineteenth century, creating a most enchanting musical experience.

The affair served not merely as a social delight but also as a meaningful tribute to the chapter’s esteemed Arts & Letters initiative, celebrating culture, learning, and the enduring power of the arts.

Indeed, laughter, fellowship, and merriment abounded throughout the afternoon, and one could scarcely depart without feeling enriched by both the company and the occasion. It was, by every measure, a splendid gathering and a most memorable success.

Orange County Mayor Jerry L. Demings has suspended his run for governor upon receiving a prostate cancer diagnosis on Monday, he said after his final State of the County Address Friday morning. With his wife, Val Demings, and family beside him, he announced that he would take this time to focus on his health. He will continue his current term as mayor through November.

“In order for me to receive the treatment, I'm going to have to come off the campaign trail. I have to let something go. I can't continue to do my job as mayor, take care of my family, and run for governor,” he said in a news conference.

“I had a wonderful career, a 45-year career, where I have given 100% during that time. I have not been home during hurricanes, other emergencies, I've been out serving the people. My prayer was that I would continue to serve at a different level, but if I don't take care of my own health, I won't serve anybody.”

Mayor Demings began his current role 2018, winning two terms, and is the first African American in the seat. He was elected county sheriff in 2008 and again in 2012. In 2021, he was named ONYX Magazine Honor Man of the Year. He has served as honorary chair of the distinguished high-powered networking event since then.
