The famous Greek philosopher Aristotle was partial to gambling. He was particularly attracted to dice. He even wrote a treatise in which he linked them to his idea of world order. In addition, Aristotle laid out a number of practical recommendations on how to increase the chances of winning when playing dice for money.

Legal gambling with an official licensing system emerged in the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. However, Americans started gambling long before that. Many of them preferred to try their luck at early versions of craps and other dice games of chance.
