Esther Eng (1914–1970) was a San Francisco-born filmmaker and one of the first Chinese American women to direct and produce films. With no formal filmmaking training, she co-produced the first Chinese-language film made in Hollywood in 1935 and went on to build a career across the United States and Hong Kong, championing strong female protagonists and all-women casts at a time when such stories were rarely centered.
After stepping away from filmmaking in 1950, Eng moved to Manhattan’s Chinatown with her romantic partner, Siu Fei-fei. Together, they opened Bo Bo Restaurant, a gathering place that became a refuge for out-of-work Chinese actors. Eng is also remembered as one of the earliest openly le***an Chinese Americans.
