After a weekend vacationing at the new house in Durham, Know Me dropped by the University of Maryland and earned his Dog-torate, then came home to Trenton to find his TKA title waiting in the mail. Exciting day!
All kidding aside, we don’t turn down any opportunity to do our bit to help science. It is thanks to the hard work of all these many different researchers that we dog people gain insights into every aspect of our dogs.
Whether it’s gathering videos for dog walk analysis, longitudinal studies of dogs and aging, or quirky tests of their cognitive abilities, everything we give comes back to help all of us.
It is probably more impressive and certainly gets more views to show a dog mimicking a person than to show a person copying a dog. However, Elisabeth Weiss asked if I ever mimicked my dogs, and I do, although usually not quite like this.
Anyhow, I thought it would be fun, for Know Me’s birthday, to have an inside out lesson, in which he led me in activities.
He had great fun deciding what we were going to do.
We do quite a bit of table stuff with props, some of which is on the video, and also quite a bit of noise making, of which I included a small clip. He made big and small sounds very deliberately and also did a little bit of head shaking for me to copy.
All in all, a lot of fun.

I teach my dogs through conversations. It feels weird and anthropomorphic to say things like that, but the more we engage our dog’s mind and encourage them to share in the learning process, the easier it is to develop teamwork and create an environment in which we can teach our dog amazing skills.
Join my webinar on Sunday March 22nd to learn how to teach your dog mimicry and how starting along that path can lead to cool tricks and better behavior. Sign up info in comments.
We had a lot of fun indoors while the snow fell outside. Know Me loves to play ‘school time’ and learn new things.
He’s having fun with mimicry and really getting the hang of differentiating between 1&2 regardless of the objects and location. A difficult task for a dog.
We also learned to BARK when shown a paper plate and softly woof when shown a little cup. A fun mental exercise!
