See the chrysalis stage. I love them. 🦋

It is so sad that they are on the endangered list now. Did you know that less than 10-20% of monarch caterpillars make it to the butterfly stage?

There are 5 “instars” each caterpillar goes through where they shed their skin 5 separate times and then transform into the chrysalis. They are prone to diseases and parasites, as well as very sensitive to any pesticides. One tiny munch of a plant that has been treated even just once with pesticides will kill them. But not at once, often times after they are in their 3rd, 4th, 5th or even chrysalis stages.

I can’t tell you how heartbreaking it has been to raise some caterpillars from eggs only to have them die from a TFly parasite as they were attempting to transform into a chrysalis.

So next time you see a monarch butterfly, take your hat off to them because it is really a miracle and an amazing thing that they made it!
