Will you own nothing and rent forever? 06/04/2025

Political intervention into the marketplace beyond rights-defense may have good intentions but it generally yields results that are either mixed or ineffective at best if not entirely counterproductive at worst. Such is the case with America's current housing crisis, which was needlessly precipitated through a proliferation of public policies like rampant monetary inflation, reckless home-loans, zoning ordinances, building codes, occupational-licensure laws, environmental regulations, et cetera. This FEE Undoctrination video explains more...

MyHometown – City of Orem 07/20/2024

"Orem is set to welcome the MyHometown Initiative, which is a partnership between the City, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other local religious institutions, partnering community organizations, and community members. Over the past several years, this initiative has launched successfully in four other Utah cities (Provo City, Salt Lake City, West Valley City, and Ogden City) and is aimed at improving the lives of and opportunities for residents."

I'm excited about this program coming to my adopted hometown of Orem. It's not a public welfare program that compels people to "help" each other as politicians dictate, thankfully, but it's a volunteer organization that both mobilizes and organizes residents to freely love-and-serve each other in various ways, which include teaching useful skills (like speaking English as a second language, playing the piano, sewing, using computers, et cetera), cleaning-up yards, and improving homes.

If you live in Orem, then please consider participating in this program to improve our community together!

MyHometown – City of Orem “The strength of our City lies in its people, and we are excited for this new initiative that will uplift and strengthen our residents. We are working closely with MyHometown to tailor the programs and resources to the needs of our residents, and we believe this will truly transform the community ...

A Case for Freedom from Zoning - Defending Utah 01/03/2024

Zoning violates God-given rights, defies Constitutional law, de-optimizes economies, and fosters socialism, as detailed in this essay that I wrote for Defending Utah.

A Case for Freedom from Zoning - Defending Utah Utah’s sixth-largest city of Orem is currently torn between residents who want to zone for more high-density housing served by heavily-subsidized

United Way’s Sub for Santa program seeing ‘unprecedented’ request for charity 12/18/2023

United Way of Utah County's Sub for Santa program is shouldering an unusually-heavy burden this year, and would appreciate additional volunteers to help with buying needed Christmas gifts for needy local families. Please consider being among them!

To my fellow Christians: I welcome you to please choose a fitting birthday gift for Jesus Christ the Savior, such as by maintaining a broken heart and a contrite spirit, by following His perfect example in loving both God with all our souls and our neighbors as ourselves, and/or by serving as His figurative hands to help Him "light the world" with loving service. Whenever we serve "the least of these," rather than pass them by on the other side, we serve Him. Although we can never do everything for everyone, we can always do something for someone. Service opportunities abound if only we bother to notice them or even to seek them out. We might find them in nursing homes or in addiction clinics or in homeless shelters or even right nextdoor. God can help us to find them as we turn to Him in prayer. Regular loving service not only helps to build heaven-on-Earth but it also reduces excuses to implement counterproductive alternatives like socialism. Let's please choose to give!

United Way’s Sub for Santa program seeing ‘unprecedented’ request for charity With just days before Christmas, the United Way of Utah County is needing the public’s help, whether from individuals, families or groups, to help spread holiday cheer to the less fortunate through its Sub for Santa program. According to the agency, the need for donors to take on families is great...

Light the World Giving Machines Are Back in 2023 12/17/2023

I hope that my fellow Oremites are enjoying this festive season, and I wish a very merry Christmas to those who (like me) are celebrating the birthday of Jesus Christ.

I welcome my fellow Christians to please choose to join millions of us worldwide in giving a fitting birthday gift to the Light of the World this year, such as by maintaining a broken heart and a contrite spirit, by following Him in loving/serving both God with all our souls and our neighbors as ourselves, and/or by serving as His hands to help Him "light the world" with loving service in 25 ways over 25 days. One option to consider is to donate to the Giving Machines sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which will appear this year in 61 physical locations worldwide, including Orem's University Mall, plus one virtual location on the Internet. Please consider participating!

Whatever your religion, if any, it feels wonderful to freely choose to help the needy among us. Plus, it reduces excuses for counterproductive alternatives like socialism.

Light the World Giving Machines Are Back in 2023 An important way you can spread the light and love of Jesus Christ this Christmas is through one of many Light the World Giving Machines. The Church of Jesus...

Sub for Santa: Young family needs help this Christmas as father pursues medical school 12/11/2023

Hey, fellow Oremites, here's one of many great opportunities to help a needy family this Christmastime, which I welcome all to consider.

For those among us who (like me) are celebrating Jesus Christ's birth, let's please remember that, whenever we serve "the least of these," we serve the Savior---which, along with a broken heart and a contrite spirit, constitutes a great birthday gift for Him. Such opportunities abound if only we bother to notice them or even to seek them. We might find them in nursing homes or in addiction clinics or in homeless shelters.

I remind those who are religious that God can help us to find such opportunities as we turn to Him in prayer. Although we can never do everything, we can always do something. Moreover, freely choosing to love/serve our neighbors as ourselves carries a side-benefit of reducing socialists' excuses to perpetrate legalized plunder---forcibly taking is never as good as freely giving. What if we were figuratively in their shoes?

Sub for Santa: Young family needs help this Christmas as father pursues medical school Editor’s note: All names of Sub for Santa participants have been changed. To help a family like this one, call the Sub for Santa hotline at 801-356-6300 between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or visit https://subforsanta.org. How to Fix Housing Affordability... 11/22/2023

As this video's text features, America is currently enduring a "housing crisis" of skyrocketing housing costs for many reasons. If such trends continue unabated, then housing might become so unaffordable one might need to be a millionaire to buy a politically-approved shack---but, if we restore genuinely-free markets in which people's rights to both property and contract are fully respected, then sanity in housing prices should gradually start to return. Let's please do it!

Evaluate the Scenarios. Take the Survey Here. – Imagine Orem 10/27/2023

Imagine Orem is recruiting Orem's residents to play central economic planner by helping to devise a grandiose vision for how to develop the lands surrounding Orem's UTA FrontRunner station. This visioning process wantonly ignores the fact that much of this land is owned by private citizens who might have very different ideas about what they'd like to do with their own property. It's partly due to free markets, in which everyone's equal God-given (or natural) rights to both property and contract are properly respected, that Orem developed into one of America's best places to live---and it's only with continued respect for those same rights that Orem may remain so. The only sort of central planning that we should accept is that which helps our public infrastructure to keep-up with our private development. So, let's please insist on this to Imagine Orem!
