Please if you are sick stay home, if your children are sick don't send them to school! If you must go out wear a mask to protect others from getting sick. Practice good hand washing. This year's flu season has been brutal already. The flu tried to kill Maddy in 2018. It caused massive brain swelling and permanent damage to her brain. Stay safe out there.

As flu season gets underway, global health experts are increasingly worried about a NEW STRAIN of the virus that popped up in June — four months after the makeup of this year’s flu shots had been decided.
The new strain, a version of H3N2, is causing outbreaks in Canada and the U.K., where health officials are warning about the early wave that’s sending people to the hospital.
The annual flu shot doesn’t prevent people from getting infected with the flu. But can lessen the severity of the illness. Last year, the vaccine was up to 55% effective in keeping adults with the flu out of the hospital.
Of note: Last season was one death shy of the worst non-pandemic flu season (2009). Further, 90% of the 287 children under 18 that died were NOT fully vaccinated and 50% that died were perfectly healthy (like Alana).🙁.
Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious diseases expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, encourages people to get the shot anyway.
“All of the data over previous decades shows that even if there is not a close match, use of the vaccine continues to prevent hospitalizations, intensive care unit admissions and continues to help keep people out of the cemetery,” he said.

This is what happened to Maddy when she was 6. We are so fortunate she survived when they thought she wouldn't. So many families are not as fortunate! 😞 Before this happened we had no idea the flu can attack the brain and cause severe swelling!
It's incredible.... Today marks 7 years since Maddy was rushed into her first brain surgery that saved her life! She's overcome and recovered so much these last 7 years and always amazes us! We are forever grateful for Dr. Louden and Dr Tony and Any other staff that fought and rooted for Maddy to live and recover. Spending time together as a family and celebrating today. ❤️
Maddy decides to open a nail salon 💅 and do her dads toe nails!
When she was in the PICU at CHOC Hospital my toe nails were painted, and I will never forget the feeling I had when I looked down to realize that she might not paint them ever again.
Every time I got on the elevator someone asked about my toenails, and every time I explained that my 6 year old daughter, on life support and not expected to live, did my toenails. I’m sure some of those strangers in the elevator regretted asking me, but that’s just where we were at the time.
So glad to have Maddy doing my toenails again! It’s a special bonding experience that I will alway cherish.

Recently Miracle Maddy attended outdoor science camp with her school. We are reminded every day how fortunate we are. How strong she is. She is surviving and thriving!!!!

Mom post: This month we celebrated Maddy's birthday! She's continued to do wonderfully. Each birthday we celebrate feels just a bit extra special.
Then on Tuesday her dad had his kidney removed due to a tumor (likely cancer but waiting for pathology results) No other treatment for it is expected which is the good news. Recovery from a surgery like this is rough and takes time. Prayers please that he will continue to gain strength and pain will lessen each day and there will be no set backs or complications during his recovery.

Miracle Maddy
This page is for the family and friends of Madison Morrison who was in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at CHOC Hospital in Orange, California. The family started their journey on February 4, 2018 when Madison was rushed to PICU after having over 20 seizures in one night, a stroke, and encephalitis which caused her brain to swell. Later we discovered that this was caused by the Flu. Three surgeries were performed, one was for preventative monitoring and the other was explained by the Chief Medical Neurosurgeon as an emergency surgery to save Madison's life. The surgery performed was a frontal lobe bone flap, in where the front portion of the skull was removed to allow the brain to release swelling and pressure. Madison was put into a medically induced coma, and on life support. Through the next few months Maddy has recovered slowly, as she had to re-learn how to talk, eat, walk, etc. This is a very difficult time for the family, causing extreme depression and utter disbelief, but together the family will fight right along side Madison! With God by our side we will overcome this! Please take a moment today to say a prayer and talk to God for Madison. Thank you all for your love, prayers, and thoughts.
