Kali was only 2 months old when the seizures started. She was tested for and diagnosed with hemimegaloencephaly (HME) and Ohtahara syndrome—both neurological disorders causing severe seizures—and strabismus, an ocular misalignment resulting in crossed eyes.

Thanks to exceptional care, cutting-edge procedures and surgeries, and support funded by philanthropy, her parents, Jemma and Adam, are thrilled to report that their sweet little girl has been seizure- and strabismus-free since 2021 and is dreaming of a future as a nurse and superhero.

“They’re the same thing, right? Nurses are superheroes,” Adam says, smiling at his daughter.

A BIG thank you to our friends at Costco for dedicating the month of May to raising funds for Rady Children’s Health Orange County and Children’s Miracle Network!

As our largest retail partner, Costco’s extraordinary commitment to our mission helps advance hope, health, and healing for kids in our community. We’re incredibly grateful for the generosity of Costco employees and shoppers who make a difference for our children and families every year.

As part of the May fundraising campaign, Costco employees also hosted special visits with some of our grateful patients. These memorable days gave our families the opportunity to share their stories and celebrate the impact of how donations have positively impacted their lives.

At this year’s CHOC Walk in the Park, presented by Disneyland® Resort, on Aug. 2, we honor Carter Ankeny's memory by naming him our 2026 CHOC Walk Ambassador.

One month before his fifth birthday, Carter was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Undergoing 21 months of chemotherapy treatment at Rady Children’s Health Orange County, formerly CHOC, Carter courageously fought for three and a half years before suddenly passing away in October 2017.

“Carter never feared going to the hospital, and the staff made our stays the best we could have hoped for during one of the scariest times of our lives,” his mother, Jamie, says of her late son’s cancer journey.

Inspired by Carter’s brave battle, his loved ones formed Team to spread kindness, to live life without fear, and to find a cure for cancer. Walk in support of Carter by registering today at CHOCWalk.org.
