Chapman University student Madee Sabatier doesn't miss a gym day- as a matter of fact, she hits the gym EVERY day!
When it comes to sticking to her routine, Sabatier says the following:
“Exercising is something that is a priority for me… If someone wants to hang out with me in the morning, I always tell them 'after I workout,' ...it's something that I really need to do every single day, because it sets me up for success."

This is only a sneak-peek; stay tuned as I wrap up this week's story on student exercise resources.

As I continue learn more about the importance of exercise for college students (and the unique ways that they can go about it) my journey has brought me to Madee Sabatier (top) and Becca Leberman (bottom) . Both are full-time Chapman students who believe in the importance of exercise, and both find a balance between assignments and activity through club sports like Chapman soccer.
"Exercising can be hard for a lot of people and it can be difficult to get yourself to go do it," says Leberman.
However, Leberman also believes that club sports have helped her find time to prioritize her health.
"It has given me a place to exercise that is organized," she says.
Sabatier agrees, claiming that exercise is a "top priority" for her, and citing how sports like soccer are a perfect way to stay fit.
Stay tuned this week as I learn more about resources at Chapman to help students stay fit, all while having fun and managing their time.

Calling all Chapman students! Have you ever attended one of the free group fitness classes on campus?
For my story this week, I interviewed group fitness instructor (and student) Tess Martinelli about the importance of exercise for student health.
"Overall I just feel as though my mental and physical wellbeing is just incredibly increased when I’m staying active,” Tess says.
Tess teaches HITT (High Intensity Interval Training) classes on Monday nights from 5-5:45, and Thursday afternoons from 4-4:45. She additionally teaches a weight training class on Wednesday mornings at 9:30. In addition to her own classes, she recommends attending the pilates, spin, or yoga classes offered for free on campus, available to join here: https://recportal.chapman.edu/Program/GetProducts?classification=00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000026002.
Would you ever be interested in taking a workout class? Let me know your thoughts! And stay tuned as I learn more this week about the importance of exercise for student health, as well as what other resources are available at Chapman University.

A short clip of my interview with Dr. Kumar at the
Chapman Fish Interfaith Center. Here, Dr. Kumar uses an analogy to describe how the mind functions better when it's focused on one present activity, as opposed to "scattered" (or thinking about too many things at once).

Quotes from my interview with Inner Peace Club President and Vice President Reagan Cisar and Paola Martini. Do you meditate? If so, what does it mean to you?

Dr. Jay Kumar is the Director of Wellbeing at Chapman University and author of the book "The Science of a Happy Brain." During our interview, we discussed the nature of his work, which he says is largely based in neuroscience. We covered the science behind why meditation works, the importance of grounding oneself in the present moment, and how our brains can learn these techniques over time to live healthier, happier lives. "You learn to be less reactive, and more adaptive," Dr. Kumar says.
To learn more about the science behind mindfulness and meditation, (and how it could help improve our lives) look out for my full story coming later this week!

This week, I am exploring the mental health resources made available for students Chapman University . My search has brought me to Chapman Inner Peace Club, a student-run organization dedicated to mindfulness and meditation practices.
Club president Reagan Cisar (pictured below) is an advocate for such practices, after seeing how they could transform her own mental health, helping her manage stress and life's difficulties. During our interview, she shared the following with me:
" I experienced very severe mental health issues, for quite a long time....Now that I’ve found a way to cope in a healthy and constructive way, I really just want to share that with people. And I want people to know that it is possible."
