********ALABAMA RED SNAPPER SEASON********
On Tuesday, NOAA announced the 63 day fishing season for the federally permitted for-hire (charter) vessels. The federal for-hire season will begin 12:01 a.m. June 1, 2021 and end 12:01 a.m. August 3, 2021. A decision concerning the length of Alabama’s 2021 recreational red snapper season for private vessel anglers will be made shortly after the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council meeting which will be held April 12-15, 2021. The private recreational season for red snapper, set by each of the Gulf States, is based on the number of pounds (quota) allocated to each state by NOAA Fisheries after advisory input from the Council. There are multiple factors that could influence the amount of quota Alabama will receive for the 2021 private recreational season. The Marine Resources Division will provide a press release and social media posts when that decision has been made.
