New California Law For Warehouse Workers
California on Sept. 23 became the first state to bar mega-retailers from firing warehouse workers for missing quotas that interfere with bathroom and rest breaks under a new law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The measure also bars retail companies such as Amazon.com Inc., and others from disciplining workers for following health and safety laws, and allows employees to sue to suspend unsafe quotas or reverse retaliation. The bill applies to all warehouse distribution centers.

April Services PMI is strong still, reports ISM
The reading for the reportโs key metricโ the Services PMI (formerly the Non-Manufacturing PMI)โcame in at 57.1 (a reading of 50 or higher signals growth)โfell 1.2%, growing, at a slower rate, for the 23rd consecutive month. Services sector growth has remained intact for 145 of the last 147 months through April, said ISM.
The April Services PMI is 3.7% below the 12-month average of 61.8, with November 2021โs 68.4 and Februaryโs 56.5 representing the high and low points over the last 12 months, respectively.

Cheap Gas Prices
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer met on April 27 to discuss possible legislation to reduce gas prices, according to a Democratic aide.
Leaders are hoping to pass legislation dealing with gas prices before the end of May but would need Republican cooperation in the Senate to do so. The GOP is pushing for expanded fossil fuel production domestically, something progressive Democrats may be unable to support.

North American โbig boxโ transactions gain traction
In its โNorth American Overview,โ CBRE looked at the 23 โmost dynamicโ North American big-box markets, finding that big-box transactions represented 450 million SF across these markets (in the United States, Canada, and Mexico), marking a 29% annual gain over the 2020s 350 million SF.
Whatโs more, CBRE observed that bog box vacancy rates dropped to a record-low 3.4% in 2021, below the 2020s 4.6%, with four markets having vacancy rates below 1%, paced by Los Angeles at 0.2%, as average first-year rents rising from 2020s $5.19 to 2021s $6.03.
