Meet OCSD Alumnus Travis Moyer, Class of 2015!

Some of Travis’ favorite memories from his time at OCSD come from the business classes he took and his involvement in athletics. He shared that his business courses provided him with a strong foundation in real-world skills and helped shape his interest in pursuing a career in business. At the same time, participating in sports taught him discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. Together, these experiences played a significant role in shaping who he is today and preparing him for both college and his professional journey.

Following graduation, Travis earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Hartwick College, followed by his MBA. He is currently in his final semester of a master’s program in Business and Marketing Education at SUNY Oswego, which will qualify him to teach business and marketing courses at the K–12 level.

For the past seven years, Travis has built a career in higher education. He began working in undergraduate admissions at Hartwick College and later at Hamilton College, where he focused on student recruitment and helped guide students through the admissions process. He later transitioned into graduate admissions, where he has overseen recruitment and enrollment strategies while working closely with prospective students as they pursue advanced degrees.

In addition to his work in higher education, Travis is also a co-founder of Lagana and Cerrillo, a food company he started alongside fellow OCSD alumnus Jared Charette. One of their most exciting milestones has been seeing their sauce on the shelves at the Oneida Price Chopper.

To future graduates, Travis offers this advice: "OCSD is the foundation of your life, but it is not the rest of your life. What may feel out of reach right now is something you will be capable of one day. Take advantage of your time here. Enjoy your teachers, your peers, and the clubs and organizations you are part of, because those moments go by faster than you think."

We are proud to celebrate Travis’ accomplishments and look forward to seeing what he achieves next!

Oneida Students Put Their Financial Skills to the Test in Stock Market Challenge

The last week of May marked the conclusion of the annual Oneida City School District Stock Market Challenge. Organized by Mr. Ottaviano, the competition brought together students from Otto Shortell Middle School (OSMS), Oneida High School (OHS), and several adult participants.

OSMS teams were made up of students from Mr. Ottaviano’s social studies classes, while OHS participants represented Mrs. Myatt’s business classes and Mr. Myatt’s social studies class.

Each team started the challenge in February with a hypothetical $100,000 to invest, using the funds to purchase four stocks. Throughout the competition, teams tracked their investments and watched their standings change as weekly results were posted.

This year’s challenge featured a record-breaking 30 teams, making it the largest competition to date. Congratulations to this year’s winner, William L., whose team, Mr. O’s Spaghettios, came out on top!

A great job to all participants for putting their investment strategies, critical thinking, and financial literacy skills to the test!

What a way to celebrate the end of an incredible high school journey!

Oneida High School seniors recently traded their classrooms for roller coasters as they spent the day at Six Flags, making memories with friends before graduation. From thrilling rides and lots of laughter to spending time together outside of school, the trip was a well-deserved opportunity to celebrate four years of hard work, growth, and achievement.

Third graders in Mrs. Weaver’s class recently put their science skills to the test while exploring the effects of friction on motion!

Students investigated how different surfaces impact the distance a toy car can travel by rolling cars across carpet, sandpaper, tile, and felt. Before testing, they made predictions about which surface would allow the cars to travel the farthest. Then, they conducted experiments, measured distances, recorded data, and compared their results.

Through this hands-on investigation, students discovered that rougher surfaces create more friction, which slows objects down, while smoother surfaces create less friction, allowing objects to travel farther. It was a fun and engaging way to bring science concepts to life while encouraging critical thinking, observation, and teamwork!

A Year-Long Project with a Lasting Impact at Seneca Street!

Students in Mrs. Armlin’s class at Seneca Street Elementary recently celebrated the completion of a very special project they have been working on since the beginning of the school year!

As part of their social studies unit on community service, students were challenged to design and carry out a project that would make a positive difference in their community. After brainstorming ideas, they decided to create a Little Free Library for the Oneida community to enjoy.

From start to finish, this project was truly student-driven. The class worked together to design and sell raffle tickets, raising the funds needed to purchase building materials and books. Through teamwork, creativity, and determination, they turned their idea into reality.

Today, their Little Free Library proudly hangs outside the main entrance of Seneca Street Elementary, where it is available for the entire community to use. Community members are encouraged to stop by, take a book, leave a book, and help keep the joy of reading circulating throughout Oneida.

This project not only promoted literacy, but also taught students valuable lessons about service, leadership, and the impact they can have when they work together toward a common goal.

A huge thank you to Mrs. Armlin and her amazing students for creating such a meaningful resource for our community. Your hard work will inspire readers for years to come!

And a special thank you also goes to our Seneca Street Custodian, Mr. Whitbeck, for building it!

5th Grade Track & Field Day

Durhamville Elementary's fifth graders recently spent the day at Oneida High School for Track & Field Day, enjoying a variety of activities that encouraged teamwork, friendly competition, and plenty of fun.

Students were divided into teams made up of children from all fifth-grade classes, giving them the chance to work together, meet new classmates, and build friendships. Experiences like this are especially valuable as students prepare for their transition to middle school next year.

Beyond the races and events, the day was about learning to support one another, work as a team, and step outside of their comfort zones. It was great to see so much encouragement, sportsmanship, and school spirit throughout the day.

A huge thank you goes out to our staff members who helped make the event possible. From organizing activities to running events and cheering students on, it truly took a team effort. Special thanks to our PE teachers for all of their hard work planning and coordinating a day that our students will remember for years to come.
