Today Kellen shows us the Chaga Mushroom! 😮
Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a type of fungus that grows primarily on birch trees in cold climates. It's technically a parasitic fungus, meaning it feeds off the host tree rather than decomposing dead matter.
Claimed benefits include:
- Antioxidant properties
- Immune support
- Blood sugar and cholesterol regulation
Pretty cool, right? Let us know if you've had Chaga before in the comments 👇🫶
(Always be careful when eating things you find in the woods! ⚠️)
We make sure to mark trees in a very specific way...
It helps loggers identify which trees they should snag and which trees they shouldn't. 🌲
Always make sure you make your marks as obvious as possible in the woods. Aim for at least 5-6 feet above the ground, roughly eye level. 👀👍
Did you know you can eat Hickory Nuts? Just make sure it's Shagbark Hickory before you eat it, otherwise you'll get a bitter surprise...😔
Spring but never spring in Upstate NY 🥲
How do you indentify a Sugar Maple vs a Soft Maple during spring? 🌲
During the beginning of spring, Sugar Maples have white, dangly, flowers that protrude from the ends of the branches, while the Soft Maple has red ones!
How do YOU quickly tell these two apart? 👇🤔
We have extended the application window for our Spring/Summer 2026 internship program!

How well do you know your trees? 🧐
Today we are reviewing the Yellow Birch, or the Betula alleghaniensis! The bark is really good for starting fires, and as it grows the bark completely changes.
What's a fun fact you have about the Yellow Birch? 👇🌲
Here are three types of timber markings, described by an out-of-breath Adam.
1. Ring Around = Tree that needs to be sawed
2. Two/Three Stripes = Property line & boundry
3. X or Slash = Firewood tree; take it down!
These three markings are extremly common, and actual markings may switch depedning on the job site.
Let us know the weirdest marking you've ever seen out in the woods! 👇🌲
The most important rule when you are pruning trees in forestry:
Make sure you're pruning with love and care 🫶🌲
Prune the branch correctly! It's important to under cut and avoid ripping bark, otherwise you will damage the tree and make it harder for it to heal and block itself from rotting/pathogens!
Are you really bluecollar if you haven't gotten a piece of equipment stuck at LEAST once? 😉💪
