We installed a walnut floating shelf on our blue accent wall recently, and we think it looks great!!

Many of my loyal followers don’t know I am not a woodworker full time. I’m definitely chasing that dream! But in the meantime I’m a climbing arborist. I spend most of my time every week in the trees 🌳trimming them up, addressing problem branches and even removing dying or dead trees. Can anyone tell me what species I’m working in here???

We had some nice weather today, so we let these striped beauties take a dip...in mineral oil. They’re almost ready to hand off to gift-givers, marking the end of enGrained’s 2020 holiday commitments.
Now it’s time to focus our thoughts on family, food and figuring out what great products we’re going to offer to you in the new year.

Hi! Remember us? We’re still here, just...less social. It’s the holidays, and that means sanding date nights. We have a huge custom cherry workhorse order to fulfill, and we’re dedicated to the challenge. Devin is passing the time by binge-watching The Office before it leaves Netflix. (Is there a more 2020 thing to do, Netflix?! Oh, The West Wing too? 💔) Meanwhile, Lois is staying motivated with jammy ‘90s and 2000s tunes. Thank you to everyone who placed orders from enGrained and small makers like us this year. We appreciate you!

We’re more than a little jealous of the lucky people receiving these personalized striped serving boards for Christmas. Switching up our classic walnut-maple (center) for exotic rust-red padauk and rich purple heart versions gives us all the 😍.

I spent the weekend hanging out with friends, family and this American elm tree. After acquiring some new equipment this winter, I was itching to add it to my climbing saddle. It was a great excuse to get outdoors.

Does anyone remember when it wasn’t snowing in Omaha? I’m recalling 50 degrees in January. Yeah. Memories. Well, I found one of the few acceptable days in February to slab up a section of trunk. It didn’t disappoint. I’m looking forward to the beautiful pieces I’ll create with it.

The wood stove is getting a workout this week. Brr! It’s nice to have all the leftovers from tree jobs at the ready right outside. Nothing goes to waste 👍🏻
“What do you want for dinner?” How often do you hear some form of that in your home? We probably have 10-15 go-to meals (give or take) that we cycle through frequently for no-fuss, easy weeknight prep. Devin loves to cook, so for 2019, he’s made a personal commitment to become a more frequent cook, a better cook and have a bigger repertoire of common go-to stuff. This weekend, he created a delicious homemade agnolotti and focaccia with fresh basil pesto. Have a similar goal? Give yourself a boost with a beautiful enGrained cutting board to make you a mealtime master. Check out enGrained.com or Etsy.com/shop/enGrainedOmaha

Today’s view from the office is brought to you by self-employment. I’m doing some alfresco slabbing before the forecasted white stuff rolls in tonight. This linden tree surprised me—I didn’t anticipate such great detail out of it. Still in queue: some undeniably gorgeous walnut logs that we harvested with this tree last week. Lots of future project potential here.

Woodworking is “enGrained” in us.
Devin and Lois Bethune operate enGrained, an artisan woodworking shop out of Omaha, Nebraska, specializing in end-grain cutting boards.
Woodworking is “enGrained” in us. In the end, we all have to find something in life that makes us happy. Lois and I have found that handcrafting high-quality wooden cutting boards is knocking down that door to happiness we haven’t been able to open yet. We come from different professional backgrounds but merge together to bask in the pride we feel when our customers testify how much they love our artisan products. Specializing in function over frivolity, we know what makes a great kitchen cutting board. We use rubber feet on most of our end-grain boards, and various sizes ensure we can accommodate any kitchen. The end-grain board is the best surface for knife edge longevity, and our attention to board care ensures our end-grain boards can last for generations! That said, a unique pattern expressing you in your kitchen has never hurt a thing, so find the board that expresses you. Shop around...find what’s in you.
