Amberlyn (left) enjoys designing spaces that positively impact everyday experiences and brings a positive attitude to the studio each day.

Ian (middle) approaches projects with curiosity and focuses on creating designs that support the people who use them.

The 1990s marked a new era of connection for both educational design and the firm itself. Following Bob Mabrey becoming a principal in 1989, ZBA transitioned to ZBM, with a growing focus on educational and religious architecture. Shortly after, Zenon retired, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the firm.

At the same time, schools were evolving into hubs for collaboration and community. Architecture became less about walls and more about the spaces between people, creating environments that encouraged interaction, flexibility, and shared learning. This decade helped shape a design philosophy centered on connection and the role architecture plays in bringing people together.

Walthill Public School- Walthill, NE

We recently celebrated a huge milestone for Walthill Public School with the groundbreaking of their new PK-12 learning center!

It was an exciting day alongside students, staff, families, and community members as the vision for the new 90,000 SF facility officially began to take shape. The building will replace the District’s aging facility, expand daycare and preschool programs, and bring the entire district together under one roof.

Designed to reflect and celebrate the community’s heritage, this new school will create opportunities for learning, growth, and connection for generations to come.

In 1982, Dave Ciaccio founded Ciaccio Design Group as a landscape architecture firm, establishing a foundation rooted in site-driven design. When Jim Dennell joined in 1988, the practice expanded to include architecture and evolved into Ciaccio Dennell Group (CDG), taking on projects across the region in landscape architecture as well as educational and religious design.

This period of growth and evolution reflected a broader shift within the firm. The 1980s became a decade defined by change across technology, pedagogy, and form, shaping an approach that embraced adaptability and positioned design as an ongoing, living process. It set the direction for how the firm continues to think, work, and evolve today.
