Great tips on dealing with potential water issues related to all the thawing that we are experiencing right now!

Hey everyone! Spring is finally trying to break through today! This is going to mean water in most basements as months worth of snow tries to melt off in the span of 2 or 3 days. Want to know what to do to keep your stuff dry? Here are 6 tips to help:
1. Always extend your downspouts! Your downspouts are going to putting out enough water in the next few days to act like a hose that was left on. Extend your downspouts at least 6 ft away from the house wherever possible.
2. Try to remove snow from the edges of your roof if possible and shovel snow away from your foundation. Dont kill us for recommending more shoveling. It's cheaper than cleaning or replacing your basement carpet.
3. Get storage up off the floor or away from the walls. You're almost guaranteed to see some water come into the basement, dont assume you're exempt and risk ruining those wedding photos or high school letter jackets.
4. Use fans to keep air moving in the basement to help evaporate water as it comes in.
5. Make sure your sump pump is ready to do some heavy lifting. Clean the tub out if needed and manually test it to make sure it kicks on.
6. Share this info/post with as many of your family or neighbors or realtors as possible to help them keep their heads above all this water.
Don't freak out, your house isn't failing and you aren't alone. We likely won't see these conditions again for another decade maybe. Just be prepared and call us if you have questions.
