One of the most expensive assumptions a business owner can make is:

"My subcontractor has insurance, so I'm protected."

Unfortunately, that's not always true.

Many business owners are surprised to learn that their own insurance policy may exclude or severely limit coverage for work performed by 1099 contractors. Some policies specifically exclude uninsured subcontractors, while others contain provisions that can create serious coverage issues when claims occur.

That's why simply asking a subcontractor, "Do you have insurance?" isn't enough.

At a minimum, you should be collecting a current Certificate of Insurance (COI) from every subcontractor you hire. But even that isn't the end of the conversation.

Certificates can expire. Policies can be canceled for non-payment. Coverage limits can change. In some cases, we've even seen forged certificates provided to unsuspecting business owners.

For larger projects or higher-risk work, consider taking additional steps:

• Request a current Certificate of Insurance before work begins. • Verify coverage directly with the insurance agent or carrier when appropriate. • Ask to be added as an Additional Insured when the situation warrants it. • Keep copies of all certificates and endorsements with your project records. • Review your own policy to understand how subcontractors are treated under your coverage.

The reality is that lawsuits don't always stop with the person who caused the damage. If a subcontractor makes a mistake, injured parties often pursue everyone involved in the project.

And here's something many business owners overlook: even if an investigation ultimately determines that you were not responsible for the loss, defending yourself can still be expensive. Attorney fees, court costs, expert witnesses, and the time spent responding to a claim can add up quickly. One of the biggest benefits of a properly structured liability policy is not just the potential payment of a claim, but the legal defense and support it can provide while liability is being determined.

A few minutes spent verifying coverage today can save thousands—or even hundreds of thousands—of dollars tomorrow.

Insurance isn't just about buying a policy. It's about making sure every piece of the puzzle is actually in place before something goes wrong.

If you're a contractor or business owner who uses subcontractors, do you currently verify their insurance, or do you simply collect a certificate and move on?

One of the hardest parts of our job is delivering news that people don't want to hear.

Not because we enjoy pointing out problems. Quite the opposite.

When someone asks us to review their insurance, we aren't just looking for a cheaper price. We're looking for gaps, exclusions, and surprises that could become devastating if a claim ever happens.

That's why we offer complimentary policy reviews, even if you never become a client.

Sometimes we find simple issues like deductibles that are higher than expected, missing coverages, or policies written incorrectly for how a home or business is actually being used.

Other times, the problems run much deeper.

We've reviewed policies that excluded the very work a business was hired to perform. We've seen coverage purchased online that looked great on the surface but would have provided little to no protection when the biggest risks showed up. We've seen business owners who thought they were fully covered, only to discover critical exclusions buried in the policy language.

Those conversations are never easy.

No one likes hearing that the policy they're paying for may not protect them the way they thought it would. No one likes hearing that proper coverage may cost more than what they're paying today.

But if the choice is between having an uncomfortable conversation now or watching someone face a lawsuit, major loss, or financial hardship later, we'll choose the uncomfortable conversation every time.

Insurance isn't really about policies. It's about protecting families, livelihoods, employees, homes, and years of hard work.

Our goal has never been to sell everyone who calls us. Our goal is to make sure people understand what they have, what they don't have, and what could happen if the unexpected occurs.

If a review confirms you already have great coverage, we'll gladly tell you that too.

Because at the end of the day, doing what's right for people matters more than making a sale.

Losing health insurance coverage rarely happens during a calm season of life.

Maybe you changed jobs. Lost Medicaid eligibility. Turned 26 and aged off a parent's plan. Went through a divorce. Had your work hours reduced. Or experienced another major life change.

In the middle of everything else going on, you're suddenly expected to understand deductibles, provider networks, prescriptions, enrollment deadlines, and whether you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

In this video, I walk through some important things to consider before choosing a new Marketplace health insurance plan and discuss a few of the common mistakes people make when they're trying to make quick decisions during stressful situations.

If you've recently lost coverage or know someone who has, I hope this information helps make the process a little less overwhelming.

Insurance isn’t just about having a policy. It’s about having the right protection when life takes an unexpected turn.
Too often, people find out there’s a coverage gap after a claim happens — whether it’s a roof that settles for actual cash value instead of replacement cost, a business policy missing key endorsements, or health coverage that doesn’t fit their real needs.
The cheapest option isn’t always the best value, and “good enough” can become very expensive later.
At Acuhawk Insurance Solutions, we believe insurance decisions should come with education, guidance, and confidence — not confusion. Taking a little extra time to review your coverage now can make a major difference later.
If it’s been a while since you reviewed your policies, this is your reminder to make sure your insurance is working for you, not against you.
