About five years ago, one of my mentors said something that completely shifted my perspective: “It’s good to honor Black History Month, but I’m about making Black history.” That simple statement challenged me to think beyond the past and focus on the present and future. If we’re not careful, we can start believing our greatest days and most transformative change-makers are only behind us.

That conversation started me on a journey to better understand my legacy and African roots. Next month will mark the 50th anniversary of the day my father left Sierra Leone for the United States—a decision that forever changed the future of our family and community. By His grace, it will also mark my return to Sierra Leone, where we will continue creating history.

Call it Black history. Call it African history. Either way, we’re making an impact today that will ripple into the future. History isn’t just what we read about—it’s what we’re building right now, often without realizing it.
