Sam Miller Comedy

I did comedy at a casino tonight and it was pretty fun.

I feel like I might jinx it if I say this, but I've had a lot of good sets in a row. I feel like I might have leveled up. I'm working a lot of new material in and I've been bringing back some old stuff and finding some new angles. It's really exciting.

Casino shows can be rough and I generally try to avoid them but the folks at Quil-Ceda were awesome. It was really cool to see a lot of my fans there rocking my shirts.

I'm flying to Atlanta to start my tour tomorrow and this was a good send-off.

Anyway I'm going to bed. I got to wake up tomorrow and finish packing.
Montgomery, Birmingham, Tampa, in that order, starting on Friday. Come see me. I'm on a heater.

I don't do a lot of casino shows but I'm doing one tonight and my homie Shaun came out. If you can make it here by 7 you should come check it out. Even if you're a little bit late, you should come check it out.

Dear Tampa, Florida

If you didn't know, I really love Tampa. It's the first place in Florida I ever performed. In fact, it's one of the first places in the South I ever performed. I have some family there and so I was able to stay with them to save money.

I'm coming there on Sunday to perform at what I think is the best comedy club in Florida, Sidesplitters. A lot of folks would agree with me.

Ticket sales are a bit slow but they're picking up. It's hard these days. Money's tight. I get it. Just know if you come out I'm going to do my utmost to make sure that you have a fantastic time.

This will be the last show of this tour and I'm planning on going off. I'm not going to have a lot of time because I'll be driving in from Alabama but where should I eat?

Bonus points if it's open late.

Bonus points if it's in between the club and the airport.

Dear Birmingham, Alabama

I've done comedy there before and I'm doing it again there this Saturday at a place called True Story Brewing. I've always had a good turnout in Birmingham and I hope this Saturday will be the same. Ticket sales are kind of low right now but I think they're going to turn around. Maybe you can help me turn them around?

Also, my friend Chris is going to be with me on this trip. He doesn't do comedy, he's just my friend. We're looking for amazing places to eat and maybe some stuff to do. What are some dope things we can do in Birmingham? Where should we eat? I hope I see you and I hope I eat too much food. I'll probably eat too much food.

Dear Montgomery, Alabama

I am indeed performing in your town this Friday at a place called Jerry's Juke Joint. I do indeed want you to go. I've done comedy in Montgomery before and I had an amazing time and I had a good turnout.

I'm not going to lie. Ticket sales are not great right now but I have faith they will turn around. For that to happen I would love your help. And just so you know if you come to the show I will be very funny. I've had a lot of good sets in a row and I have a lot of new material that I'm very excited about.

My friend Chris is coming on the road with me. He doesn't do comedy, he's just a really good friend of mine. I would love to know your recommendations for awesome food and other weird stuff we should look at. Bonus points if you work in a weird place and you want to give us a tour.

It's 10:15 p.m..

I'm at a place called Smith Rock outside of Madras. I can see its shape silhouetted against the dark blue, dark gray sky. I'm waiting for the sun to go all the way down. I want the dull light to disappear so I can look at the stars. I want to soak them up before I drive back to Olympia. There's a lot of amazing things about Olympia, but it is in the I-5 Corridor and even on a clear night you can't see the stars that well.

I could have left right after the show and probably made it home by 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. and I'm kind of wishing I did. Instead, I'll go to my hotel and I'll watch a documentary until I fall asleep. I'll get an early start. Make it home before noon for sure. It's weird when you have a job where you work weekends and you sleep in other beds that aren't your own. And When you come back on a Monday at noon everybody else's week has already started. My kids being on summer break, they'll probably just be rolling out of bed. I stopped at a grocery store somewhere between Medford, Oregon and Crater Lake and got them these 5 ft long tubes of sour sugar. I've gotten them sour sugar tubes before, but never at this length.

I wonder how many times I've done this now, where I leave them for three, or seven, or ten days. I buy them little things. As I'm buying them I picture their face when they see them. I can hear them laugh.

I leave and then I come back. They know I'm coming back. I don't know what it's like to have a dad like me. My dad was around all the time, until I turned 12. My father had a cough, it turned into a bad cough, it wound up being mesothelioma. And he was gone.

All the kids at my school knew that he died. I was a weird kid and I got made fun of a lot. It felt really good when I came back to school and everybody was nice to me. I made up stories all the time, and one of the stories I made up was that my dad was actually a spy and he was deep undercover and that he was going to return from his secret mission eventually. I told so many people that story. Looking back, I imagine they probably felt pretty bad for me. I think I loved telling people that story because I wanted it to be true. I still wish it was true.

My wife Brittny and my mom do a good job with the kids while I'm gone. My kids aren't alone and they know I'm coming back. And usually when I get back we do something really fun.

I'm jealous. When I'm gone and I'm on the road they have each other. All I got is a hotel room, a CPAP and this rock that I can't really see because it's too dark. But I know it's there. And come tomorrow I'll be there too.

This tour has been amazing. It's been beautiful. Everything's been sold out. I got one more show and then I go back tomorrow.

I went to Crater Lake today. All the traveling I've done and somehow I've never been. Took my breath away. I don't think I've ever seen water that blue. Got a nice little hike in, even saw a groundhog, or a marmont. Either way, it was funny looking.

Ticket sales are not great in Madras, OR for tonight. They're not terrible but they're not great. No matter what I'm going to have a good time. It's a beautiful venue called Maragas Winery and I can't wait to get there and I can't wait to get home tomorrow.

If you're in Madras or Bend or anywhere in Central Oregon and you're looking for something to do tonight, I will indeed make you laugh. There's a whole bunch of jokes I'm doing right now that I've been working on for a while and I'm finally getting them dialed in. It's pretty fun.
