Time to look for northern lights and sunspots. Sunspot AR3664 has gone around the sun and is back on our side. This is the same sunspot that was visible to the naked eye (with eclipse glasses on) two weeks ago and was responsible for the awesome northern lights of May 10th. Be ready for the celestial fireworks!

THE STORM IS NOT OVER: Last night's historic geomagnetic storm produced auroras as far south as the Florida Keys and Puerto Rico. The storm is subsiding now, but it is not over. At least one more significant CME is on the way, and it could push the storm back to severe or even extreme levels. Follow this developing story @

Take out your eclipse glasses today (May 8).
A big sunspot is visible.
How big is AR3664? Sprawling almost 200,000 km from end to end, it is 15 times wider than Earth. You can see AR3664 through ordinary eclipse glasses with no magnification at all. Moreover, it is easy to project an image of this sunspot onto the sidewalk or a white screen just as Carrington did in the 19th century.
What do we do with the eclipse glasses?
1) Use them to look at the sun. You don't need to wait for another eclipse.
2) With solar maximum coming, sunspots may be big enough to see via eclipse glasses without any other special equipment.
3) Donate them to Astronomers Without Borders. They distribute them around the world after vetting them for safe viewing.
4) Donate to STEM For All so that they can be vetted and used for STEM coaching.
