On March 3, 1845, Florida officially became the 27th state in the Union, marking a major milestone in the nation's westward expansion. At the time, Florida was a sparsely populated territory with fewer than 60,000 residents, connected by rugged trails, rivers, and small settlements.

Statehood brought new opportunities for growth, commerce, and self-government. Over the next 181 years, Florida would grow from a frontier state into one of the most populous and economically important states in America.

For communities like Okeechobee, Florida's journey from wilderness to thriving hometown reflects the determination, resilience, and pioneering spirit that helped shape our nation.

As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, we remember the people, events, and milestones that built both our state and our country.

Good Morning, Okeechobee!

On January 1, 1892, Ellis Island opened as the nation's first federal immigration station. For millions of immigrants arriving in New York Harbor, it was their first stop in America.

Between 1892 and 1954, more than 12 million people passed through Ellis Island seeking freedom, opportunity, and a better life. Their stories helped shape the communities, industries, and culture that define the United States today.

As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, we remember the generations of immigrants whose dreams and determination helped build our nation.

Okeechobee County is moving forward with construction of a new public airboat launch area at the Clif Betts Jr. Lakeside Recreation Area (Lock 7).

At today’s meeting, the Okeechobee County Board of County Commissioners awarded Bid No. 2026-04 for the construction of a new public airboat launch area at the Clif Betts Jr. Lakeside Recreation Area, commonly known as Lock 7.

The Board awarded the project to B&B Site Development in the amount of $597,299.30 following a competitive bidding process. Three qualified contractors submitted bids for the project.

The project includes the construction of a concrete airboat launch ramp featuring Trimax structural lumber slide boards, a designated parking area with Handicap-accessible parking, drainage improvements, shoreline stabilization measures, site preparation, and protective fencing designed to safeguard environmentally sensitive areas and prevent damage caused by unauthorized vehicle access.

County officials have observed recurring damage to restoration and stabilization efforts along portions of the shoreline due to vehicles driving in restricted areas. The fencing component of the project is intended to protect public investments, improve safety, and help preserve the integrity of the site.

Prior to bidding, the County obtained the necessary permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and coordinated project requirements with regulatory agencies.

Funding for the project will initially come from the County's Landfill Trust Fund. The County intends to reimburse the Landfill Trust Fund with proceeds generated from the pending sale of the Okee-Tantie property upon closing. In addition, the County is actively seeking grant funding opportunities to help offset the total cost of the airboat launch project.

The Clif Betts Jr. Lakeside Recreation Area serves as a popular destination for outdoor recreation and public access to Lake Okeechobee. County officials believe the improvements will provide a safer, more durable, and more accessible launch facility while helping protect surrounding natural resources.

"This project represents an investment in public access, environmental stewardship, and long-term site preservation," said Assistant County Administrator Justin Nelson. "The improvements are designed to provide a dedicated launch area while protecting the shoreline and infrastructure from continued damage."

A conceptual rendering of the proposed project is being released to help residents better understand the scope of improvements planned for the site. Final construction details may vary based on permitting requirements and field conditions.

Residents may review meeting agendas, staff reports, and supporting documentation through the County's public records and meeting portal at www.okeechobeecountyfl.gov.

A Legacy of Service Honored Once Again

Today, Okeechobee County proudly rededicated the Alderman Building, recognizing a family whose commitment to public service helped shape our community for more than seven decades.

The building is named in honor of four generations of Alderman family members who served the people of Okeechobee County from 1917 through 1988:
• Clarence Alderman (1917–1918)
• R.H. Alderman (1919–1931)
• Bessie Walker Alderman (1932–1956)
• Atheleon Alderman (1957–1988)

Originally dedicated on April 12, 1990, the building was rededicated on June 18, 2026, by the Okeechobee County Board of County Commissioners to commemorate this remarkable legacy of public service.

For 70 years, the Alderman family answered the call to serve their community, leaving a lasting impact on Okeechobee County government and the residents they represented. Their dedication stands as a reminder that strong communities are built through generations of civic commitment, leadership, and service to others.

Okeechobee County is honored to preserve and celebrate this important part of our history.

On October 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York Harbor as a gift from the people of France to the United States. Standing 305 feet tall from the ground to the tip of her torch, Lady Liberty became a powerful symbol of freedom, democracy, and opportunity.

For millions of immigrants arriving in America, she was often the first sight of their new home—a reminder that the promise of liberty belongs to all.

As we celebrate 250 years of American history, we remember the enduring ideals represented by the Statue of Liberty: freedom, hope, and the pursuit of a brighter future.
