📖 “In 1856 in the month of March went west to Illinois…”
Six simple words.
No dramatic introduction. No explanation. No fanfare.
Just a brief note written in a family Bible more than 150 years ago.
Yet behind those words is an extraordinary story.
A family packed their belongings, left behind everything familiar, and journeyed west in search of opportunity. Years later, another entry records that they returned home. Additional notes tell of work, farm purchases, rented homes, and the everyday struggles of building a life in 19th-century America.
These aren’t stories preserved in government records.
They’re not found in census schedules.
They survived because someone picked up a pen and wrote them into a family Bible.
Most people think family Bibles contain only births, marriages, and deaths. But sometimes they contain something even more precious: the voice of the family itself.
This rescued Stone Family Bible, published in 1871, preserves not only names and dates but also a firsthand account of one family’s American journey.
Imagine if this Bible had been discarded.
The names might survive somewhere.
The story almost certainly would not.
That is why Bible Rescue works to find, preserve, and share family Bibles before they are lost forever. Every rescued Bible may contain the missing chapter of a family’s story.
❤️ Somewhere today, descendants of the Stone family may not know that an ancestor once recorded:
“In 1856 in the month of March went west to Illinois…”
Today, because this Bible was rescued, that voice can still be heard.
Together, we Rescue. Record. Remember.
