Fascinating perspective. Explains a LOT. 😁

What is the ‘Peter Principle’? It’s an epidemic that no one wants to admit: Good workers keep getting promoted until they can no longer do their job well.

“In a hierarchy, every employee tends to rise to [their] level of incompetence." —Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull (the educators who coined the principle).

Why does this happen?

• Good followers ≠ Good leaders
• Skills that got you promoted ≠ Skills needed for new role
• Companies promote based on past performance, not future potential

Result: A company full of promising people who actually become worse at their jobs.

The Peter Principle explains why we have a leadership gap, a conundrum that Josh Bersin, the principal of Bersin by Deloitte, articulates well:

“Every individual performer, individual contributor who gets promoted to a supervisor or managerial job isn’t really taking on a new job. They’re really taking on a new profession.”

The solution to the Peter Principle has two parts:

1. Provide substantial transition training between roles.

If your new leaders are stagnating or failing in their roles, you are accountable.
Someone who has spent their entire career following orders cannot become a great leader overnight.

2. If the leadership role is not a good fit, then move your talent laterally to a better-fitting position.

Be a champion of lateral moves; both Thomas Jefferson and Steve Wozniak made them, and countless others.

The Peter Principle isn't a death sentence. It's a wake-up call.

• Challenge your team to grow
• Train them properly
• Place them where they shine

Witnessing someone out of their depth is only the beginning of the story; it’s not how the story ends.

So This is interesting 🧐

Between 800,000 and 900,000 years ago, the population of human ancestors crashed, a 2023 Science study finds. The results suggest there were only ~1280 breeding individuals during the transition between the early and middle Pleistocene.
