Filing your taxes is no easy task.

Tracking down documents. Hoping you filled things out correctly. It's stressful even with help, and for many, nearly impossible without it.

That's where the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program comes in. Trained volunteers complete millions of federal and state tax returns every year, for free, helping people unlock benefits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit.

We partner with a network of trusted, community-based organizations through GetYourRefund, our free, IRS-certified virtual tax filing service, to help as many tax filers as possible.

Here's why these organizations are some of the most important people in their communities every tax season: https://bit.ly/4vlmrSH

No two states are approaching AI in exactly the same way.

Across the country, we’re seeing a wide spectrum of progress. Some states are still in the early stages—focusing on governance, policy development, and building internal capacity. Others are beginning to pilot AI in specific programs. And a smaller group is starting to demonstrate what meaningful impact can look like in practice.

Our 2026 Government AI Landscape Assessment explores each state, offering a closer look at how they’re approaching AI, where they’re making progress, and where challenges remain.

What does it actually mean for a state to move from using AI tools to real impact? Did AI help states deliver more benefits? Reduce burdens on caseworkers? Improve access for families?

In our 2026 Government AI Landscape Assessment, we found that states are building the foundations. They’re establishing governance structures, investing in workforce capacity, and exploring early use cases—the foundations needed for responsible AI adoption.

But moving from adoption to implementation to impact looks different across states. This year’s assessment takes a closer look at that transition, highlighting how states are progressing along the AI journey, and what it takes to get to real world outcomes.
