1/30/26- National Shutdown

“Hate has no home here.”
A statewide economic blackout that began as a protest against intensified ICE violence in Minneapolis has grown into a broader national movement. Organizers, community groups, unions, and local leaders are calling for people to pause work, school, and consumer spending on January 30 in solidarity with immigrant communities and in response to recent enforcement actions.

Supporters say the goal is to demonstrate the collective economic and social impact of immigrant communities and to call for accountability, safety, and dignity for all. Whether participating directly or staying informed, organizers are encouraging dialogue and engagement.

More details available through local organizers and verified news sources, and more resources available at niot.org/nios.

“True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.”

The normalization of hate against communities of color and our immigrant neighbors in cities such as Minneapolis is unacceptable. Trust between communities and those that serve and protect them is foundational to democracy. No one should live in fear solely because of their race, country of birth, or other protected characteristic. Since its founding 30 years ago, NIOT has worked to close the gaps of understanding to counteract bias and hate in all forms, including community policing standards developed in conjunction with law enforcement and underserved communities. As Dr. King said, “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.”

Let Light Guide Us in the Face of Antisemitism and Hate | Not in Our Town 12/19/2025

We are sending love and light to Jewish friends and the community, as we mourn and express outrage at the antisemitic massacre in Australia. Not In Our Town offers FIVE THING WE CAN DO NOW. And, we remember the story of Billings, MT where the small actions of many people stopped a rash of hate crimes in their town 30 years ago. How can we each find a way to take action now?

This year marks 30 years since the original Not In Our Town film first PBS broadcast - the story of how the people of Billings, Montana, stood up for their neighbors and sparked a national movement, inspiring thousands of communities to declare: Not in our town, not in our schools, not in our country.

We invite you to host a community screening of the original Not In Our Town film. Gather your family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues to revisit the story that started it all - and consider what its lessons mean today. We also encourage you to use your screening as a grassroots fundraiser for Not In Our Town or your local NIOT group. Thanks for your activism and courage over these many years. You are the change we need!

A big thank you to Bay Area UASI for a powerful, inspiring summit on public safety and preparedness! It was an honor for our Not In Our Town team to be in conversation with remarkable partners from the FBI, SFPD, and Parents for Peace about preventing hate. We’re proud to continue this work of building awareness, resilience, and unity in every community we serve.
