Our program shelter is named in honor of Dr. Sharp!
A.J. Sharp (left) was a professor at the University of Tennessee from 1929 to 1974. He was considered an expert on mosses and has two genera named for him (Neosharpiella and Unclejackia). Zennoske Iwatsuki (right) was a Japanese botanist and bryologist who came to Tennessee to get his master's with Sharp. He later became a professor at Hiroshima University. Together, Sharp and Iwatsuki are responsible for collecting several thousand bryophyte and vascular plant specimens from Japan, India, Southeast Asia, Alaska, and Mexico. Their collaboration lasted many years and furthered the relationship between the Hattori Botanical Library and the Tennessee Herbarium.
