The Northridge Farms Thoroughbred Horse Photograph Collection is one of over 650 archival collections in Special Collections & Archives. These collections give library users access to unique and historically relevant primary source research materials. The Northridge Farms Collection has the distinction of having more pictures of horses than any other archival collection at California State University, Northridge.
The 100-acre Northridge Farms was purchased by J.H. and Annette Ryan as well as Mary Strnad in 1943. Before the Ryan and Strnad purchase, the property was a working thoroughbred horse farm known as the Marwyck Ranch. Barbara Stanwyck, a movie star, and Zeppo Marx, her business manager, purchased the 130-acre Marwyck Ranch property in 1936. The original property line ran from Devonshire Street on the north to Lassen Street on the south. The eastern boundary was Reseda Boulevard with the Wilbur Wash on the western edge (near Wilbur Avenue).

School’s Out for Summer Reading
The concept of “summer reading” is a distinction between school year reading and summer leisure reading that has endured for generations, shaping contemporary summer reading programs and recommended books that emphasize choice, relaxation, and the joy of reading for its own sake. Summer reading has long been associated with leisure reading rather than academic study. The tradition of reading for pleasure rather than assigned reading began in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as formal education became more structured and seasonal.
During the summer months, when schools closed and families often spent more time outdoors or traveling, reading was promoted as a pleasurable pastime that could offer entertainment, personal enrichment, and support intellectual curiosity. Public libraries, publishers, and educators encouraged readers, to explore books of their own choosing rather than assigned texts, reinforcing the concept that summer reading should be driven by curiosity and enjoyment.
