Today is 💜 WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY 💜
Every older adult deserves to live with dignity, safety, and respect.
Elder abuse can include:
Physical abuse
Emotional or verbal abuse
Financial exploitation
Neglect
Sexual abuse
Abandonment
Know the Signs ⚠️
• Unexplained injuries
• Sudden changes in finances or banking habits
• Poor hygiene or untreated medical needs
• Missing property (cash, jewelry, etc.)
• Withdrawal from family, friends, or activities
• Fearfulness around a caregiver
• Unexplained bank account withdrawals or changes to POA documents
What You Can Do
✔️ Check in on older adults in your community
✔️ Listen and offer support
✔️ Report suspected abuse
✔️ Help raise awareness
If you suspect or are experiencing elder abuse, there are immediate resources available:
🔺Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS): Contact Adult Protective Services (APS) to report suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Remember, everyone is a mandatory reporter!
State Hotline: 1-800-652-1999
🔺Nebraska Area Agency on Aging: Local agencies often run prevention programs, connect older adults to support networks, & can guide you to legal assistance. Main office: 308-535-8195
🔺National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA): Visit the NCEA Resource Library for state- specific reporting numbers and educational materials.
Together, we can create a community where older adults are valued, respected, and safe.
