Crookston Designs

We received even more snow since my last post, but most homes should still be okay. See my previous post about snow loads on homes. I thought I would post about other structures. The only other structure I have is my RV. Different RV's are designed for different roof loads. Some could be designed for as low as 20 psf. If its deigned to the mobile home code it should be designed for at least 30 psf which is probably still okay in Cache Valley right now.

So the question is should I worry about the snow on my RV? Its not as easy to answer as for a home. I decided to sweep the snow off of mine. Be careful not to use anything that would puncture or damage the membrane on your roof if you decide to clear yours off.

With all the snow we have received in Cache Valley recently people have worried about the amount of snow on their roof. Depth of snow is not always a good representation of the weight. Its really about the amount of water contained in that snow. Light fluffy snow could be as light as 5 pounds per cubic foot while packed heavy snow will be up around 22 pounds per cubic foot. For comparison water is 62.4 pounds per cubic foot.

Most areas in Cache Valley I design the roof for 38 pounds per square foot, on the bench I usually design for a little more. So your roof should be designed for 21 inches of heavy snow and much more if it is light snow. With the snow we have received recently your roof should be just fine with no need to remove the snow.

It should be noted that older homes may not have been designed to current standards. If you see any signs of failure in your roof you should have it looked at by a licensed engineer. If you have added insulation to your attic, this can increase the amount of snow that stays on your roof and may be a reason to take a look at the capacity of it.
