A big thank you to WTKR News 3 meteorologist Toni Nargi for visiting Paradise Creek Nature Park and helping spotlight the importance of pollinators through our recent beekeeping workshop! 🐝🌼
Bees, butterflies, and other pollinators play a critical role in healthy ecosystems, and one of the best ways to support them starts right in your own yard. Planting native flowers, shrubs, and trees provides the nectar, pollen, and habitat these hardworking species need to thrive.
Ready to make a difference? Add a few native plants to your landscape this fall and help create a healthier future for pollinators and the Elizabeth River.
Elizabeth River Project hosts beekeeping workshop The Elizabeth River Project hosted beekeepers Lacy Shirey and Bill Gregory to showcase how to care for bees and provide for your local pollinators as well.

🌙✨ Recently spotted at Paradise Creek Nature Park, the Luna moth is one of nature’s most beautiful and fascinating insects with its pale green wings and long trailing tails.
The Luna moth's adult life is as remarkable as it is short. After emerging from its cocoon, it has just about a week to fulfill its purpose. Unable to eat, it relies entirely on energy saved from its caterpillar stage. During those few precious days, it seeks a mate and lays the eggs that will become the next generation of Luna moths. 🌙💚🍂
What many people do not realize is that the Luna moth’s story depends on something often overlooked: leaf litter. After caterpillars finish feeding, they spin cocoons among fallen leaves on the forest floor, where they spend the winter protected from the elements. When leaves are removed, these cocoons can be disturbed or discarded before the moths have a chance to emerge.
So the next time you see leaves covering the ground, remember they are more than just nature’s mulch. They provide essential habitat for Luna moths, butterflies, native bees, salamanders, and countless other wildlife. 🍂
The river is reminding us who's in charge this weekend. 🌬️🌊
With the nor’easter expected to continue to bring strong winds and rough conditions tomorrow morning, we are canceling the Guided Kayak Paddle at Paradise Creek Nature Park on Saturday, September 26. Land-based programs will continue as scheduled.
We'll save the kayak adventure for a calmer day. Thank you for your understanding, and please stay safe as the storm moves through our region. We look forward to paddling with you soon!

Ryan Resilience Lab Closure Notice 🌊
Due to inclement weather and tidal flooding, the Ryan Resilience Lab will be closed Thursday, September 24.
Part of learning to live with sea level rise is recognizing when conditions make access unsafe. With today's tides expected to impact surrounding roadways, we anticipate that access routes to the Ryan Resilience Lab may be compromised and have made the decision to close the facility out of an abundance of caution.
As a result, tonight's WHRO Public Media Local Matters: Climate & Environmental event will be rescheduled to a later date. We will share a new date as soon as it is confirmed.
Thank you for your understanding as we prioritize the safety of our visitors, staff, and community. Please stay safe and take precautions during the storm and flooding conditions.
