Hampton Roads in the summer just hits different. ☀️
Longer days, more time outside, local spots filling up, and every excuse to enjoy what this region has to offer.
For the Retail Alliance team, summer is also a reminder of how lucky we are to support the businesses that help make this community feel so full of life. From local shops and restaurants to events, experiences, and favorite neighborhood stops, small businesses are a big part of what makes this season feel special.
What’s your favorite way to spend summer in Hampton Roads?

Have you ever walked into a store simply because something caught your eye?
Maybe it was a window display, a clever sign, a seasonal setup, or a product display that made you curious enough to stop and take a closer look. 👀
Those small details do a lot of heavy lifting in retail. Before a customer ever opens the door, they're already getting a sense of the experience inside. Thoughtful displays, creative merchandising, and a little personality can turn a quick glance into a visit.
Sometimes the smallest details are the ones customers remember most. Which storefront display has caught your attention recently?

One of the first questions we hear from prospective members is pretty simple: Can you help me?
The answer is usually another question: Tell us a little about your business. 💙
Because no two retailers are exactly alike. One business owner may be looking for leadership development. Another may need help navigating social media, AI, operations, or a specific challenge they’re facing right now.
That’s why Retail Alliance focuses on understanding each retailer’s goals before recommending resources, programs, or connections. The best support starts with listening.

Father's Day is a chance to celebrate the people who help build something that lasts. 💙
For the Whitaker family, that legacy extends far beyond the bakery.
After moving back to Virginia to be closer to family, Robert and Sherry Whitaker opened the first Nothing Bundt Cakes location in the state. Today, that vision has grown into multiple Hampton Roads bakeries, with children and even grandchildren helping carry the business forward.
Many local businesses have stories like this behind them. They’re built on family, hard work, and a desire to create opportunities for the next generation.
This Father's Day, we're celebrating the dads, father figures, and family leaders who help shape businesses, support their communities, and leave a lasting impact.

In recognition of Juneteenth, we're highlighting a few Black-owned businesses within the Retail Alliance community. ❤️
These entrepreneurs are helping make Hampton Roads a more vibrant place to shop, dine, gather, and connect. Through their creativity, passion, and dedication, they're contributing to the character and energy of our local retail community every day.
Today and every day, we're grateful for the many business owners who help strengthen our region. We're proud to celebrate these entrepreneurs and the impact they continue to make across Hampton Roads.

Last week, we had the opportunity to celebrate the ribbon cutting for Freedom Boat Club of Hampton Roads' new Yorktown location at Legasea Marine. 🎉
This new location makes it even easier for Hampton Roads residents to get out on the water and enjoy everything our coastal community has to offer.
Freedom Boat Club's membership model gives boaters the chance to enjoy time on the water without the responsibilities of boat ownership, creating more access, flexibility, and opportunities for adventure.
Congratulations to the Freedom Boat Club of Hampton Roads team on this exciting milestone. We're proud to celebrate your growth and look forward to seeing the impact this new location will have in the Yorktown and Seaford communities. 💙

Summer has a way of turning one quick errand into five different stops. ☀️
A gift for the wedding this weekend. A new outfit for vacation. Coffee before the road trip. Lunch after the farmers market. Something last-minute because, somehow, there is always something last-minute.
Before you default to the usual big-box run, check out the local shops, restaurants, and small businesses right here in Hampton Roads.
They can help with the list, and they make the whole experience feel a lot more personal.
Save this as your sign to make your next summer stop local.

One of the biggest surprises for many retail entrepreneurs isn’t opening the business. It’s everything that comes after.
Inventory. Staffing. Rent. Marketing. Technology. Unexpected expenses that seem to pop up at exactly the wrong time.
Building a successful retail business takes more than a great idea. It takes understanding the day-to-day realities of running one. 💡
That’s why education, mentorship, and practical guidance can be so valuable. The more prepared retailers are to navigate those challenges, the better positioned they are to grow with confidence.

A great business idea is only part of the equation. Many retailers have the passion, the vision, and the drive to grow. What they often need is access to the right resources, guidance, and opportunities along the way. That's why Retail Alliance launched Retail Catalyst. 💡
Through partnerships with organizations like ABNB Federal Credit Union, NuMarket, and the Hampton Roads Small Business Development Center, the program is designed to help retailers access education, funding opportunities, technical support, and connections that can help move their business forward.
Because when local retailers have the support they need to grow, entire communities benefit.

Most people can tell when a retail district feels busy, welcoming, or full of energy. The interesting question is why. 🤔
What's drawing people in? Where are they spending time? Which businesses are helping create momentum for the district as a whole?
Those were some of the conversations explored during our recent Virginia Main Street workshops, where we looked at how consumer behavior, foot traffic patterns, and other retail signals can help communities better understand their local retail environment. 💡
When paired with local knowledge, these insights can help identify opportunities, strengthen business districts, and support the retailers that make them unique.
It's one thing to observe what's happening. It's another to understand what's driving it.
