Juneteenth is more than just a festival❤️ 🖤 💚
Juneteenth commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. June 19th, 1865, 250,000 enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, received news of their liberation; celebrating "Jubilee Day" the following year, making June 19th America's longest-running African American holiday.
Today, we commemorate the holiday as a day of reflection, restoration, and celebration with events throughout the weekend across the city of Norfolk. Looking for ways to celebrate? Read our guide on all things Juneteenth celebrations in Norfolk with the link in our bio 🔗
