Over the past several days, we have received multiple calls regarding sick, deceased, or abnormally behaving geese. Due to the recent extreme winter weather, most local bodies of water have frozen over, forcing large numbers of waterfowl to crowd together in the limited areas of open water that remain. Unfortunately, this close contact creates ideal conditions for the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).

As a reminder, at this time, we are not accepting waterfowl due to the significant risk of disease transmission to our other patients and animal ambassadors. There is currently no effective treatment for birds infected with HPAI.

Any waterfowl (ducks, geese, or swans) that appear lethargic, disoriented, neurologically impaired, or are found deceased should be treated as a suspected HPAI case. Avoid all contact with suspected HPAI birds, and keep pets and domestic animals well away from the area.

All reports of sick or deceased waterfowl should be directed to the Pennsylvania Game Commission at 1-833-PGC-WILD
