A Letter to College Sports — The Mental Matchup 04/27/2022

I want to thank my friend for sharing this article. As a parent and as a coach I find such sincere relevance in the essence of this article. We oftentimes get wrapped up in the forward motion of life, in fear of our own children falling short, when in reality we must have the ability to hit the brakes and recognize whether the race we are in and maybe whether the way we are leading our children is for the best. Awareness of ourselves and our children needs to be at an all time high!!!

A Letter to College Sports — The Mental Matchup I recently reposted a trending quote that read “we have to put the person before the student and the athlete otherwise we are at risk of losing all three.” The post was written in the wake of the passing of Katie Meyer, a standout goalie for the women’s soccer team at Stanford.

2 great quotes I came across today while reading the book “The Miracle Morning” by Hal Elrod. So many times we hear, “I don’t have time to workout” or “I’m too busy to exercise and I just can’t fit it in.” The fact is, you are choosing to not have time and to be too busy. We all make time for the things we want to do. There is one person who I have never met…..someone who feels worse because they are working out. It improves every aspect of your live when you invest even a small bit of time to physically improve yourself. No one can do it for you.

I believe this and after this past year it has proven to be true. In order to achieve the greatness we were meant to achieve, we have to in turn train our bodies, souls and minds to be great first. In order to do better, one must become better. Practicing daily habits to be the best versions of ourselves is not always easy but it is necessary and it happens one minute, one hour, one day at a time……

I’m a huge believer in incorporating boxing into any sports conditioning, preparation program but also into any everyday fitness and wellness program. Not only does it improve footwork, fitness and conditioning, it makes you tougher both physically and mentally. The physical demands of sport are becoming greater and athletes are becoming stronger. I can’t think of a better way to improve your ability to be able to withstand these demands than boxing. Anyone who has done it understands that it requires the total person both body and mind at all times. A disciplined boxer is not someone I would want to compete against in anything…..so why not have our athletes become that person…..

Leg Day yesterday.....Keeping the legs strong has more benefits in athletic success than one might think. How quickly and how powerfully your lower half can move determines many other things. It’s also important to not only do the power lifts but to also fine tune the muscles with smaller movements under less tension tapping into both Type I and Type II muscle fibers. 💪🏼🥍🏀🏈⚾️🏐🎾⚽️🏑🏒

Be sure to take the time to workout during this trying time. Without access to our gyms, tracks, parks, sports and schools it is important that we still continue to exercise not only for physical health but also mental health. Workout alone if you need time by yourself or encourage a family member or two to join you!! If anyone is looking for ideas or help or tips please let me know. I’m more than willing to help you be creative! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
