Fun Fact Friday: CNC Machines
Machining is a technology that has been around for a while now. Numerical Control Machines, which were the predecessors to CNC (Computer Numerical Control), were around in the 1940s.
Although machining is not a brand new technology, it is still very important and relevant today.

Manufacturing in the 1950's:
The U.S. economy was red-hot in the 1950s. By 1955, the U.S., with only 6% of the world's population, was turning out half the world's goods. But manufacturing saw the beginning of a disturbing trend.
For metalworking, the 1950s was a pivotal time, with the birth of numerical control marking the beginning of what many called the Second Industrial Revolution. Both machine tool builders and control suppliers were working furiously on this new technology. The 1950s was an exciting time for new ideas. Chevrolet made the first mass-produced, fiberglass-bodied car and called it the Corvette. Also the first computer hard drive and modem were developed.

In the 1800s, the industrial revolution began, bringing the steam engine along with it,. Only after the invention of the steam engine did we see what could truly be considered a "modern" lathe.
The modernized lathe couldn't come soon enough either, as the revolution also brought along with it a massive increase in production of trains, automobiles, and ships, as well as a variety of other machining tools, all of which required the use of a lathe to produce.
The new lathes were exponentially more powerful, versatile, and efficient, and this made them one of the cornerstones of the industrial revolution.

What is a CNC machine? Scrolling through your social media, you have probably come across videos of machines carving materials into various shaped objects in a precise and soothing manner. These are called CNC machines. Although they can work quite effectively as ASMR videos, their main purpose has nothing to do with helping you fall asleep.
What does a CNC machine do, then? Considering their presence and utilization in the various fields, they do quite much!
Dating back to as early as the 1940s these machines have been indispensable for industrial manufacturing. Thanks to their speed which can not be provided by live operators, it has been possible to mass-produce the materials we use in our daily life. From router machines to waterjet cutters, CNC machining is used in various forms and there is not only one type of CNC machine but three. The most common one is the CNC milling machine and engineers love them. Some programmers even make home CNC machines! However, although these versatile machines are quite handy, they have their shortcomings as well.
