Spring is here in Washington - May 2026 is shaping up to be a great month. The garden is buzzing with life - seedlings, slugs, and bulbs all making an appearance. I'm experimenting with dividing perennials like hostas and bleeding hearts, and they're responding well. Every year, I'm amazed by the new colors and flavors my garden brings. Here's to a wonderful gardening season, filled with growth and joy!

Spring in the Pacific Northwest, Zone 8. I’ve direct planted peas, broccoli, cilantro, lettuce, & potatoes. The question is “fake spring” or is spring really here? Finger crossed it’s garden season!
How to start chitting
These steps reliably wake them up without stressing the tuber:
• Move them to bright, indirect light. A north- or east-facing window is ideal. Light triggers sprout formation and keeps sprouts short and strong.
• Keep them at 55–65°F. Warmer than storage, cooler than room temp. This is the sweet spot for controlled sprouting.
• Place them in a single layer, eyes up. An egg carton works perfectly.
• Give them airflow. Avoid plastic bags or closed containers.
Most potatoes will begin showing eyes swelling within 5–10 days, then visible sprouts shortly after.
January has ended. Plan, research and a lot of dreams. I’m getting ready to start the winter seedlings indoors with seeds left over from last year. I’m planting lettuce, spinach, bokchoy, and peas I know spring is just around the corner - Zone 8. What are you planting?
